Harpers ferry to D.C.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Likely doing harper's all the way in later this summer.

larger tires help, but on road skinnie's it was fine.

you can do the last 4-5 miles into georgetown on the adjacent capital crescent trail which runs adjacent and is paved if your ass is hurting by that point. It's a 60 mile ride one way or so.

be aware, the section from great falls into DC (last 10 miles or so) is heavily traffic'd on the weekends by walkers, hikers, folks with doggos...

can really slow things down.

it's in my neck of the woods, so if you let me know when you're riding it, I can escort/show you sights when you get around into the last 15 miles or so.
Thanks. I'll start from Harpers Ferry and may end up where it's getting dark so I'm not sure if I'd pass great falls. Thanks for the information and the nice offer.

I did this with a Boy Scout troop a few years back. Most had MTBs but a couple were on road bikes. All but one or two had fenders, and those bikes and riders ended up covered with mud. On the other hand, my bike was pretty clean because I chose to ride around the mud puddles rather than through.

My advice: Ride what you have, but put fenders on. If it's rained recently, expect mud.

Dunno, I never really had one on my road bike until recently.

oh, it's required? I just got one from Nashbar that says universal fit but it actually didn't fit my Nashbar CX1 at all, likely because my handle bar is wrapped with tapes (by the manufacturer). So I'm still looking for another bell that can fit to the (middle) thick part of the handle bar.

I have done that section on a road bike with 28's. On the dry day, it was fine. On the steadily pouring day (Harper's Ferry to Antietam (off the C&O) to Hancock), 28's were unpleasant but manageable. Pedal through puddles and mud.

So the chance of rain is 80% day through night on Friday. Should I cancel the plan to bike from Harpers Ferry to DC on Saturday?
