Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Training / Racing Wheel Set?

I am about to upgrade my bike and can not afford to purchase a separate training and racing wheelset. Therefore I must find a good compromise. I am thinking Ksyrium Elites, but not sure? Any thoughts

This is almost as general as a "which bike should I get?" thread.

Anything in that price range is going to be good.

A cheapo wheelset is really cheap. You can afford those, check nashbar/performance.

Bikes: Dean TI fixie... Viner ProComp... NEXT pink sparkely!

have someone build up wheels with light hubs and double butted spokes. 28 or 32 spokes for training durability and they'll still be light enough to race on.

With DT240 hubs even massive hoops like Velocity deep Vs with 32 spokes each weigh less than K Elites. With 32 oval spokes would be just as "aero" too.

yep, find a buddy in a shop who will give you a deal on parts and get them to build you a pair, i got the DT240 hubs on mavic open pro rims for $400. I believe they are lighter than the elites but i would trust them alot more as far as durability.

Spoke weight makes the difference too. Butted spokes are probably one of the few cases in cycling where lighter really is better.

DT240 + Open pros + 64 of whatever spokes are pretty light.

With butted ovals they would be lighter than Kysrium SSC SLs (weight weenies has a listing of 1543 grams with rim tape- 64 sapim cx-rays/DT 240/Open Pros) https://weightweenies.starbike.com/li...ype=roadwheels

if you want to splooge, buy some chris king hubs. you won't regret it. or there are several other hub manufacturers such as american classic or speedcific (cheap but light wieight).
