That's 10 minutes you could have slept, ridden, or whatever else.

For me, it's a prerequisite that my coffeemaker has a timer. I set it up before bed and it's there when I am ready.

Now, I can wake up at 6and leave out around 6:30. I usually drink a cup of coffee and take a dump before the morning ride. Work is at 8am weekdays, so I only ride about 30-40 minutes/8-10 miles.

Good enough for me.. and I have plenty of time to take a shower, eat breakfast, watch news and weather, etc.... before work.

Coffee for me is black, Dunkin Donuts, room temperature, and usually a day or so old. Saves time making it, and I can gulp it down.

Regarding that other activity, IMO, this is one of the funniest posts I have read on BF:

By the time I'm done, the launch window has past. Commute aborted. Where are those damn car keys.

The worst case is when you just know the bomb bays are full, but you just can't get the doors to open. So you have to sit around the hangar and wait.

The only time I can ride is early morning. 5:45am start. Mileage contingent on whether I have a morning work meeting or not.

And Keurig, FTW. Literally 30 seconds to a hot cup of caffeine.

Fiber. Train your body for downloads on an evening schedule.

You're right. Because I'm unable to do anything else while the coffee is brewing. It is impossible to move from the stove. I can't even put on my kit or shoes because I must stand directly in front of the stove and stare at the moka pot until the coffee is ready.

Keurig is the best thing since disc brakes... oops... I mean sliced bread. :)

I haven't since I retired last year. Before that, my shifts started at 5:30AM, which meant leaving the house by 4:30AM to get there in time to change clothes and such. I do sometimes miss the peace and quiet of pre-dawn riding, though.

Ick. Might as well stir some Folgers crystals in to a microwaved cup of water.

Banzai 06-16-17 12:58 PM

Keurig coffee sucks. Has a chemical, plastic taste, and is usually watery as well.

robbyville 06-16-17 01:00 PM

True to our Palm Desert name it gets pretty stinking hot here. All this week and next our average will be over 110 degrees. We ride at 6am throughout the summer and some of us in the local club will go earlier. This morning it was 80 degrees at 5:30am. In the evenings it's still 100's at sunset so no relief there. I really enjoy the early morning though as my wife works on East Coast time so we're up pretty early either way so I can ride get a couple hours in, and then still have time to shower and take my son to school before heading into work!

I've drank my share of instant coffee. Keurig is much better than instant, IMO. I realize Keurig is not gourmet coffee... but it's convenient and very little goes to waste.

Trek, Keurig and Gatorskin tires. I'm doing well in this forum. :D

Chalk up another uncool product for me!

Just about any coffee maker can be made convenient with the addition of a $15 timer from a home goods store. As far as very little going to waste, a few environmental groups might beg to differ.

I detect some sarcasm, but to your point, it's possible to multitask while coffee brews.

Multitasking while coffee brews doesn't reduce my time to leave, because the "bathroom visit" is the final and critical path item. I certainly can't enjoy a ride with the urge to go....

There is a natural time delay between finishing the first cup and initiating this final step.

So the only way to speed up the entire process of getting out the door is to decrease the time to ingest the brew.

TMI? You're welcome.

I was referring to the coffee itself...not the plastic containers' negative impact on the environment.

The coffee snobs are out in full force today.

I don't like riding in the early morning - mid afternoons around 3pm is my jam. However in Phoenix AZ riding before 5am is a requirement in Summer. We are forecast for 120 deg F next week. In July at 5am it is still in the 90s. Coffee? Yes - iced.

aplcr0331 06-16-17 02:13 PM

I start my morning commute at 0500. I take Synthroid and I'm not supposed to eat for at least an hour after I take it, so I just have water to wash it down and maybe a drink during the 70 minute ride into work.

trekmogul 06-16-17 02:14 PM

Early rider here also.

Let me jump in here also about being a early rider. Up every morning (7 days a week) @ 245am and clipped into my pedals 0450am just like clock work. My day can not start or function without my early 20-25 mile ride every single morning. Me like most of you also need my coffee to get my started off on the right foot as i honestly do not think i could function without it. Then it is 3 half boiled eggs and a tablespoon of peanut butter and out the door I go.

2 weeks ago at about 0510am in the morning cruising along on a country road with the owner of my LBS I struck a raccoon and ended up really banged up. I have/had 2 cracked ribs, terrible neck sprain, tons of nasty road rash on my right leg and had the end of the handlebar smash the HRM module into my sternum. We managed to straighten the brakes and put the front tire back on the bead and I rode home the 9.5 miles to where my car is parked. We were riding along just about 21MPH and that raccoon tossed me like a rag doll off of that bike. I am ok but still banged and bruised. Missed 3 days before I was able to get back on the bike but very cautious and hesitant. I am 63.5 years old and that was one brutal hit i took..

I been back at my 445am rides but still very tender and spooked of those raccoons ..!

0245, that is intense. You win a medal for being up for a ride while the drunks are just leaving the bars!

I am paranoid every single morning when I head out knowing just what you mentioned..! I have always been a morning person and don't think that will ever change. I love my early mornings with my coffee ..

TimothyH 06-16-17 03:03 PM

3 eggs + peanut butter every morning is a lot of cholesterol.

Never ever a issue here with my cholesterol or my health as I have been on this health nut binge for over 10 years. I keep my weight just about 150lbs Max and I am 63.5 years old riding average of 6000 miles a year. Peanut butter gives me tons of energy and since there is ZERO MEAT in my diet, I need some fats. I usually eat about 6 eggs a day pending..

Ahhh - you were talking about the coffee itself. Well, in that case, if the result is a bad cup of coffee, haven't all of the beans that went in to it been wasted? :innocent:

I'm actually not that much of a coffee snob, though I do have a decent setup (Quickmill Anita and Mazzer Mini), but to hear Keurigs being praised as the best anything, for any but the most impatient and least discerning, is a bit much.

This is very respectable. What is your sleep schedule like?

May I ask, do you have a routine with regard to the ride? I'm assuming you vary the route, but are you going hard/doing intermittent intervals, a climbing here and there, what does a typical week of rides yield in terms of routes/feet climbed/total miles?
