My car thread is here.By the way, Cervelo R5 is at the top of my list. -Tim- Awesome about the R5. You should get it. It isn't in stores yet here. I have a 2009 R3SL with the old geometry and threaded BB. As awesome as that bike is, I think this new version could be better. A return to the old geometry, moar aero, stiffer. |
Own a 2013 Giant TCR SLR1 Aluxx M(1050g) and a 2017 BMC TeamMachine SLR02 54cm (950g) , both quite light and stiff and compliant feedback
I can only imagine the carbon TCR Advanced to add greater compliance to what is already a very comfortable ride for race geometry bike. Anyhow, if you are considering a good grade BMC frame, here are some options on leftovers that might make sense and that you can build on: 2017 BMC TeamMachine SLR02 105 ($1599/Make Offer) (51cm, 57cm, 60cm...) 2017 BMC TEAMMACHINE SLR02 105 CARBON ROAD BIKE 51CM | eBay 2016 BMC Grand Fondo GF02 Tiagra DISC Road Bike Retail $2000 ($999/Make Offer) 56CM 2016 BMC GF02 Tiagra DISC Road Bike 56cm Retail $2000 | eBay 2017 BMC TeamMachine SLR02 Ultegra ($2199/Make Offer) (48cm, 51cm, 54cm, 57cm avail) 2017 BMC TEAMMACHINE SLR02 ULTEGRA CARBON ROAD BIKE 54CM 2016 BMC Gran Fondo GF02 Tiagra srp $2000 ($1049 Buy it now) (54cm, 56cm avail..) 2017 BMC Granfondo GF02 Tiagra - 56cm Reg. $2000 These come with some excellent reviews and bike of the year honors, have gotten great reception last several years. Even the Grand Fondo frame(which i believe is discontinued for 2018) is a few cockpit tweaks away making a nice race bike. |

I guess I don't really see the difference between what bike should I buy and what bikes should I be looking at to buy.

If a gun was pointed at my head and I was forced to buy today it would be an R5 but right now I'm not even sure if I want an endurance frame or a more aggressive geometry. -Tim- |

Can you help me understand their lineup? It isn't clear to me from the website which one is the sporty, race model and which is the high-end endurance model. Furtivo? Genius? -Tim- |

Thank you for this suggestion.

Genius? -Tim- Piuma : steel (or Ti) road/racing bike. Can be custom built. Sportivo : steel (or Ti) sportive/endurance bike, more relaxed and has eyelets for racks. Can be custom built. The Genius is carbon frame road bike; The Fortivo I'm not sure, it's new in the line-up but it looks like a much more agressive race bike. Primo & Squadra are entry levels or the Piuma and Genius respectively. You can always call them :p |
Lynskey in Chattanooga has a large variety, both geometry and tubing, and will do custom if you need it. No bike manufacturer has more experience with titanium, they did industrial stuff before they moved to bikes. Great folks to deal with.

So how did this play out Tim
|
So, uh, what's the new "road" bike gonna be used for? Does it have to make you faster than anyone else? Road bikes are pretty boring unless they have magical powers that make them better than other road bikes. I want a road bike with aero tubes, fenders, clearance for 42mm tires, couplers (S&S or Ritchey Breakaway), stable handling in aero bars on 55mph descents, confident handling on trails and unmaintained roads, 3 sets of bottle bosses, and integrated lighting. I'm guessing you want something a little different.

I'm looking at a left over 2015 Cervelo R5 Dura Ace Di2 demo bike. Not in a rush at all and I've been watching them slowly drop the price for about a year. If it is still there next spring and comes with full factory warranty then I may go for it. If it sells then that's OK too. There are a few others but again, not in a rush. Still getting used to the new Niner RDO gravel bike. :) -Tim- |
If you're looking for value with your high-spec frame, Giant sell frame sets alone for their upper end models
I also like Ridley, DeRosa, Fondriest, Scott, Willier But if you're going to make it your own way, why not go all the way? Gotta give a plug to my fave: Casati, made-to-measure frames with custom paint in carbon or steel. Convert the euros on the price list to USD and discount the IVA/tax and net they go for about $3k - $4k; spendy, yes, but not crazy. |
Come to the shop I work at and meet a fellow forum member :). We have about 12 framesets in store and all of our 2017 S-Works Tarmacs are on heavy discount. We still have the Rio Torch S-Works frames, Astana frameset and I believe a few others.
If you don't like those we can order Giant TCR framesets. The TCR is going to be one the best frames out there for a really good price. |

Carbon: Allied, BMC,
Titanium: Moots, Seven, No 22, 333 Fab Steel: Stinner, Speedvagen, Breadwinner I love my SuperSix, but the nicest bikes I've ever seen were the steel brands mentioned above. Modern Ti bikes are up there as well. |

I just finished this build. It's a 2016 R5. Found a nos frame reasonably priced so I pulled the trigger. Still waiting on a stem to finish the fit.

Been there once. I ride the Cervelo RS and for gravel I ride the Open UP. Yes, I like the change of pace. There's a Norbertine priest who also rides but will have to arrange a ride with him. |
