Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who else has Vision Metron 40's?

I just got some Vision Metron 40 wheels for my bike. They're sweeeet! Problem is, the brakes squeal like HELL. They are carbon specific pads, bontrager brand. Sounds like a mic getting too close to a receiver. It's annoying, but at the same time scares the ***** out of pedestrians walking into my path so I'm a bit torn to get rid of them or not.

What kind of pads are fellow Vision owners using? Are they quieter? Or is this just a 'carbon wheel thing' ?

I have them, but I just got them yesterday and only have 2 rides (like 60 miles) worth of experience on them. I bought a set of swissstop black prince pads to go with them and they don't squeak. They do make a different noise than my old AL wheels, but it's nothing louder.

I have them, but my bike has disc brakes. We've had pretty dry weather up to a week ago...then I found that these wheels sound off when the tires are on wet road surface. I assume a difference in vibration (and probably tires) louder than my alloy wheels on my other bike. Not a problem though..I have about 620 miles on mine.

It often helps to quiet the pads if you toe them in a bit. The forward edge of each pad should be slightly closer to the when than the rear most edge. If you know how to adjust pads, you can get what is probably the right amount of toe, give or take, by loosening the pads and then re-tightening with a business card stuck in the rear most 1/4 of the pad between the pad and the wheel. You'll get a visible amount of toe when you do that, but not a crazy amount. If you don't know how to do it, just ask your bike shop, it's 5 minutes total for them.

I saw (today at lbs) they come stock on a domane sl6 pro for 3100 on sale 4k msrp. I am thinking they are cheaper cabron rims then? Wondering how much they weight? Hard to tell cause the domane is a heavier bike to begin with.

edit: seems they are around 1600 grams. not bad.

They are not a cheap wheelset.

I agree. If they were good enough for Peter Sagan, then I'm sure they're more than good enough for me.

Are they 2017 or newer Metron SL's?

I absolutely love the Vision wheels since they were updated in 2017. They have the same aero profile but they lightened them up and upgraded the braking surface.

They are now the best braking set of carbon clinchers have tried. (10 year bike shop employee and life long rider)

I've only used the supplied pads for my 55SL's and 81SL's. Try adjusting them and cleaning the braking surface.

I would 1st try to toe the pads in like Mike said above. Also, carbon wheels are a bit more sensitive to picking up debris and residue from the the road so if you were to ride in the rain or somewhat wet roads your rims and pads could get a bit glazed over causing a squeal. Easy fix is to remove the wheels, use some medium grit sand paper to gently scuff the surface of the pads (only, not rims) and then using a soft cloth dipped in alcohol gently wipe the entire braking surface of the rims to remove any residue that could be present.

If you still have noise after toeing in the pads and cleaning everything up, try some different pads. I use the Swiss Stop Flash Pro Yellow King's and they're pretty quiet for 95% of my ride. I may or may not get a slight noise under extreme panic stops or hard braking down hill but that's to be expected with carbon wheels.

As far as how good those wheels are, this video should answer that (and yes, I know they have the disc version)

Man, I lovef watching Martyn Ashto. Danny Macaskill too! They make it look so easy!

I'll try the toe-in method, thanks! The brakes do work very well, and from my ride yesterday, I might want to keep the squeal for pesky pedestrians!
