Saddle break in... how long?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I bought a Sella Italia which is supposed to be quite comfortable and as gel inserts (model is max gel flow). Rode for 15 miles and at the beginning felt great but for the last 5-6 miles it was kind of uncomfortable.

My question is: is there a break in period where the body needs to "get used" to the new saddle or should be perfect from the beginning?
If the saddle is not going to work, I would return it now and not waste any time.

Thank you in advance for the help.
I went from a WTB to a Selle Italia Gel Diva and it felt better immediately. This was the first saddle I'd bought which was over $100 and I wasn't sure if it would be worth the extra money but so far it has been. Still a goodly amount of adjustment back and forth and with the nose more one way or another to get it dialed in but I'll never cheap out on a saddle again. Oh and the right bibs/shorts can make a big difference too.

I've been watching my kid rip the covers off his seats for a while now. I think he's on to something.
I still ride Brooks - got over 100K in them and they would take about 1000 miles to get comfortable. Less with proof-hide.
But as the pads in most shorts now are like diapers, I think I may just go to a solid carbon thing.
