Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've only ever used a borrowed truing stand. I've only done some basic re-truing and spoke replacements though. Well, I guess I basically rebuilt a set of wheels on a WalMart bike my wife was using as a commuter. At first I was trying to true them up, but they were so pepe'd up that I had to take out all the tension and start over.

Why is it easier to start over instead of bringing one replacement up to the same tension?

Nice looking place.

Too bad about the heat and humidity. Deal breaker.

Because everything changes, relatively, every time you make that move. By starting over, you bring them all up together.

Y'all are making me want to build some wheels. I need carbon on my 650B+ set... but alas the hubs that came with it are not worth reusing, so I won't save anything building my own. Maybe the time after next. Also, I'm broke.

I worked too hard yesterday. I thus was asleep before nine, and am now still in the hammock more than twelve hours later, on my second cup of coffee. What great company though.

In that case I wasn't bringing a replacement up to tension. I was just trying to true up the wheel shaped object. The tensions were all over the place though so it was impossible.

For simple spoke replacements I don't even bother with a truing stand.

Truth. Irving is the worst (specifically Las Colinas). Carrollton/Coppell come in second on terrible broken concrete roads. It's the soil here.

Lol, they aren't... so they never go out of true. That's why you use them in the first place.

Apparently, brass is stronger.

It's definitely easier to turn on a lathe, something I used to do.

Oddly, the BOM from the factory rebuild lists a dozen brass nipples and the rest alloy.

They may have used brass on the rear drive side.
