Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Elita 53/39 straight to FSA Gossamer 50/34?

If I change out my Elita double to the FSA compact I'll have to get a new BB, right? According to Cannondale's website, I have the Truvativ GigaPipe SL BB, but I can't seem to find documentation for the chainline on that thing on Truvativ's website. The Gossamer cranks have a chainline of 43.5mm, but even if it were compatible, would the relatively small increase in price to get the MegaEXO compact be worth it?

THese days I think I'd get the Mega-Exo. It's cheap anyway. What does a Gossamer Mega Exo cost anyway? I thought it was $175 with BB?

P.S. Is this Elita crank ISIS? Because if it is you can switch to any ISIS double. They all use the 108mm spindle. Fortunately that was standardized.

Yes, my Elita double is ISIS. I was quoted $300 CDN at one LBS today for the Gossamer EXO and $250 for the ISIS. Will shop around a bit more as I'm in no rush to dump any more cash into my bike.

I was looking at that earlier, but that drop down box doesn't list 170mm crankarms as an option, which is what my Elitas are right now. I've also seen a few listings on eBay for around the same price.

aebike.com I think has the 170's. They're a few dollars more expensive, though.

does that gossamer only come as a compact, that's a sweet price for mega exo but I don't think I need a compact around here

Ah well, I'm in no hurry to upgrade to the compact. I'm running 53/39 with a 12-26 and have no problems with the riding conditions in my area. I just wanted to be able to use more of the gears on my cassette. I'll just wait and see if Nashbar or any of the other e-tailers release a 20% off coupon in the near future and maybe I'll take the plunge then.

There's also a seller on eBay who has the EXO version in 170 for $149.99. I've emailed him about shipping to Canada and am waiting for his response.

And Zig, the Gossamer EXO comes in standard double as well.

It's available as a non-compact... the MegaEXO is neat, for sure. I really like the external bearings. it does require a slightly different tool to install, though it's actually much simpler. it uses the Park Tool BBT-9 or the Shimano tool for DA cranks.

Well, I can get the Gossamer Compact ISIS for $170.49 USD (converts to around $215 CAD) shipped and insured up here to Canada via USPS or the MegaEXO version for $190.49 USD ($240). I'm still waiting for a response from Fullcycle, although any way you slice it, I'm paying a hell of a lot less than buying it from an LBS here...

Damnation...another purchase to ponder. I just dropped coin on an Arione, and now I have a serious mojo goin' on for these cranks.

Went through the checkout procedure with Fullcycles and it turns out I can get the EXO version shipped up here for only $200 CDN. That's pretty frickin' insane, more than $100 less than the LBS up here. Also turns out that I am running 172.5mm cranks (mis-measured the first time; should have just checked the inside crank arm ).

Now I don't know what to do. Somebody please try and stop me from spending more money
