Spring is here.

The cherry blossoms are starting to color the city, the days are getting longer, and the sun is even coming out. Has it arrived for you? Are you seeing more people out riding?

rumrunn6 03-05-18 10:58 AM

before this past weekend I would have said yes, but now, I'm not so sure. can I get back to you next week, after the NEXT Nor'easter?

Wildwood 03-05-18 11:14 AM

I'm still in ski season mode. Looking more for powder days than warm & dry.

After a couple of weeks of Arizona Winter(low 50s, cloudy, and windy), Spring made an appearance March 1st. From now until Thanksgiving, the daytime high temp should be 70+ everyday.

We are definitely through the major thaw, and I doubt we'll have any more "stupid cold" (below 0F) type weather. Most of the ice is out of my yard, and the dog has managed to create some mud to sling through the house.

But it's still a long way until continuous Spring weather. Yesterday was nice - 50F - but today, the schools are having early release due to a snowstorm. It will be a couple of months until the trees get their leaves back and anything outdoors considers blooming.

I did see quite a few roadies out this weekend. At this point, most people are on cross/gravel bikes because the roads are covered in potholes, salt spray, and sand.

You have cherry blossoms already? Really? Here in Vermont, it's a fantastic day when it gets above 40. We will get wintry mixes all month long. Sometimes a major snow storm hits in April. Won't see daffodils until the end of April. Very depressing.

Spring arrived here in February. And then ran away and hid...

I'm going to keep spending my weekends skiing at Cabin Creek until April 2. But I'm starting to get more after work miles. And now that I've seen the cherry trees going off, it's time to start riding through the U District, the north side of Queen Anne, and a lot of other places to see them. Next month there will be goslings in South Lake Union Park.

Wildwood 03-05-18 12:36 PM

Look forward to your pics, as always.

It seems days got longer in stealth mode. After having a lot of cloudy weather lately, the sun was out this morning when I headed for work, so what with the brightness, I thought I was running late. ;)
Good crowds of cyclists out yesterday, but many, like a couple on our group ride yesterday, opted for their cross and trail bikes.

Same here. That one freaky day with 70F temp was the only day when I saw a lot of people in Central Park here in NYC. Other than that, I see mostly bike delivery guys on ebikes breaking most traffic laws. The cherry blossoms don't come out until first or second week of April. Similar to Washington DC. The cherry blossoms there along the Potomac are picturesque.

Yea it was pretty nice here for a couple weeks...even hit 60 a couple times. Now it's chilly, and expecting a bit of snow over the next week again. The worst of it is well behind us though...should be sloppy for more than a day or two at a time the rest of the way.

In Texas spring begins every other week from December-March. Then it's winter again. Then spring. Then everybody has the respiratory crud from the winter-spring-winter-spring cycle and accumulation of mold spores and pollen.

A lot of places are getting an early spring this year. Seattle is definitely one of them.

Lucky you. Although I have to wonder what that means for the weather for the rest of the year. Actually I found this link that talks about that and raises a lot of concern:

mcours2006 03-05-18 02:16 PM

Not quite spring, but at least the snow is gone. Morning temps are still pretty cold, -9*C this morning, but at least last half of my commute is in partial daylight.

JohnDThompson 03-05-18 02:19 PM

I'll let you know after I finish shoveling all the snow.

For hikers here in the Seattle area, it means it will be harder to find water during summer backpacking trips. It also puts us at higher risk for a bad wildfire season, but summer rains might take care of that. In the meantime, it means I'm putting more after-work miles on my bike.

There's a thread in P&R about the longer-term implications and the pattern this fits into.

I raked the winter mulch off some of my flower beds.
Hoping we don't have a hard frost at 600ft elevation.

Yep. I’ll take the 6-8 weeks of “Monsoon Season” every year. Everyone needs a little offseason. I still ride, but I know they won’t be my strongest rides of the year.

I have found that motorists usually give a little more respect to cyclists when it’s 110+ degrees.

Silver Steve 03-05-18 05:38 PM

No Spring here in Chicago. They are currently forecasting snow

aplcr0331 03-05-18 07:03 PM

Still below freezing by the time I would be riding to work. Local MUP still has a bunch of snow on it, we got a late February dump of around 10" of snow...boo!

Most of the roads are clear however, so we got that going for us. I have my gravel kind 28 tires on the commuter so I'm ready when the temps rise a bit.
