Al, remarkably, is the first two letters of that very same element, and possesses the additional merit of being the international standard and universal abbreviation for that element, whereas the abbreviation Alu has a whole host of meanings, none of which is aluminum.
Similarly, Hel, Arg, Xen, Hyd, Fer, and Car might leave some folks
But I agree, few things look as nice as some shiny Al box rims. I got these from Velomine:

Anyway, I like those but I think I would go for something with a little height, rather than box rims

Very much nay. Polished rims look great on a brightly-painted steel frame and nothing else. Your black-anodized S1 is what I wish I had, btw, but I'd dress it up with almost anything but the wheels.
I'd also lose that stem you love so much, personally.

How about Velocity A23?
(I think I would have an uncontrollable urge to pick that sticker off.)

Picture an all black car with silver rims. Even chrome accents. Hell, I’m driving one right now.

Another option is to get a wheel-set with black rims and polished silver (or some other bright contrasting colored) hubs. (I have this on my black bike.)

Words have meaning. Why turn a two-letter, internationally-recognized abbreviation into something longer and more ambiguous?

I think with a frame like this there are only a few ways to go. More black would satisfy the critics here but I don’t want another all-black bike. Other colors I think would look bad. I wanted to embrace the metal-ness of this bike, so I think the silver works.

If I weren't crossing my fingers for my seat tube to crack I'd just sand all the paint off and do the inverse of you: bare aluminum frame, black everything else. There's an old P3K at the shop that's been sanded bare like that and it's gorgeous.

I wouldn't go all black, but I'd be tempted to accent it with cages/ housing/ tape. Or, for real fun, some bright hubs.

That bike is just begging for all polished wheels and tan/gumwall tires.

Non omnino gravis
"This thread needs more arguing about grammar. Every thread needs more arguing about grammar." --no one, ever.
I had a set of Crank Brothers Cobalt wheels, that had machined flats on the hoop between every spoke pair. It was impossibly annoying. When the sun would get in just the right position, they were like photo-strobes. I'd take a glance down at the computer screen and get flash blinded. And they weren't even polished, just machined. It got to a point where I blacked them out with a Sharpie, like some kind of savage. Properly polished hoops (like the finish on those crankarms) I cannot even imagine. For me, too much razzle-dazzle.

I'd go with what is appealing to my eye, not by the opinions on a cycling forum. Like many other components on my bikes, they will be changed sooner or later anyway. Over the years I have had 20 (?) different wheelsets. They come and go and the color never made a difference in the ride and I never cared what anybody thought about the color of my wheels.

Yes we do
The general rule is never hyphenate words ending in "ly"
Compound adjective exercises

Aluminium Crusader :-)
I followed Ray Dobbins' tips on his website. I found using oven cleaner (as he recommends) much better and quicker than sanding. Even using 2000-grade sandpaper, I still got fine scratches that were almost impossible to remove
Here's a thread about it.
Polishing aluminium parts for newbies.....
