Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I’m racing a TT tomorrow. My head has not been in the game of late. But it’s the last race of the venue’s 2018 series, which I’m in contention to win. Hopefully I can pull it together tomorrow.

Pull it together and knock 'em dead, missy.

That's a Sharp-shinned hawk, a smallish, agile woodland hunter.

The bird of prey pic reminds me: I think I’m going to take Puppy Love to some kind of critter chasing event in a few weeks. My option is Earthdog (chasing a critter into an underground tunnel) or Barn Hunt (chasing a critter into a tunnel within a stack of hay bales. Two different events, same weekend, just need to decide which.

She seems determined to catch a critter, to the point of being somewhat obsessed. I pinged her breeder about it and apparently she’s from actual doxie hunting stock. Her sister took best in show at a Field Trial (rabbit hunting), her brother is an active bird hunting doxie and her mother caught a rabbit (without a hunter!) before she was one. Who knew? I google dachshund hunting dogs and they’re used a lot to hunt rabbits and vermin and sometimes birds. There’s also a form of hunting in which they’re paired with a falcon or hawk, the doxie works the rabbits on the ground and the bird catches em from the air.

Not that we’re doing any of that. Just some plain vanilla critter chasing.

Also: went on a cooking spasm this morning

Pork shoulder —> big hunk of cooked pork + pork stock
Bag of great northern beans —> vat of cooked beans
Old bread—> buttered croutons
Too many carrots—> carrot cake muffins
Apples were on sale —> breakfast all week will now be apple cinnamon steel cut oats, starting today
Cabbage 25 cents a pound—> pickled Mexican cabbage

Lunch= white bean soup with shredded pork shoulder and buttered croutons, topped with some leftover roasted red peppers that I made last week. And a muffin for lunch dessert

Dinner tonight= carnitas tacos topped with pickled shredded cabbage and tomatillo salsa from my freezer

Plus lots of pork stock left for bean soups, I’d say I’m set until December at least. And enough soup to feed me lunch all week.

Trainers are indeed stupid, but Zwift makes them more palatable IMO.

BTW did a rain-delayed ride today, it was wet and chilly but still fun. Post-ride quick trip to the city with mrs datlas for Korean food. Yum!

I noticed that on today’s ride, the FD was not consistently shifting well from the big to small chainring. It sometimes would work fine, sometimes would delay a couple seconds, and twice I had to nudge it with my right foot.

I figure that it just needs a little cleaning and lube, sound reasonable?

53x21 emergency selection not working?
no need for FD especially at your svelte 140.

Indeed. Always take the spread, these days. In this world of beating your opponent in a nice way, instead of annihilating them, and making them cry, it's the smart move.

This morning I was thinking about how much simpler it would be if I ran for exercise during the winter instead of bicycled.
