Or, in Garmins case, a course created in Garmin Connect, then a transfer via The Connect Mobile app via BT to the device. Seamless in either case.

A bit OT, but if you know the answer great. I can see advantage of trying to use Garmin Connect to BT transfer a route from Connecto a Garmin. However, most of the course I use were created in RWGPS and have all of the cues built in. I tried importing into Connect a TCX export file that was generated by RWGPS but it doesn't seem to have the cues (or at least in Connect I can't figure out how to see the cues/turns, etc?
My typical method is dragging the TCX file into the NewFiles folder when the Garmin is USB connected to my computer.. and that gets the cues and turns to transfer fine. Is there any way to get a route originally created in RWGPS to wirelessly get into a garmin (520) with cues ?

Any reason you just don't create a course in Connect ?. It provides turn-by-turn and cues. I use RWGPS for planning by create courses in Connect for my G1000. Works fine.

A lot of bike clubs are using RWGPS for course mapping and the routes are supplied to its riders/members that way. I have no idea, but probably because it's neutral, and whatever % of riders may be using some other type of computer (wahoo, etc).

I still really don't understand with all the technology these days, why something fundamental like opening a course in whatever app (Strava, Connect, RWGPS, etc) doesn't then have option to get a course file (ie. TCX) created and sent back thru the phone via BT to the device.

^ For starters TCX is a Garmin file format. Not sure if they've officially released control of it to the public or not.

Which is the file format I always use.. created as an export from RWGPS
Edit.. But.. I have to copy this TCX file manually, from my computer's downloaded files folder, to the garmin unit while it's plugged into a computer

Went with a Garmin 520 on the new bike, smart phone won't do what it can do.

I use RWGPS website to make .tcx files that I upload to the Lezyne website. It's the only way to get cues to my route without using Lezyne's route generator for the Super GPS. I forget the settingsi need to use though, but it's worth the effort.

No auto-pause (with Strava on a phone) so your trip into the bathroom

to take a piss is part of your ride (phone in jersey pocket).

I seem to have found an answer in a way.. or I should say that for Garmin at least, the solution seems to be a 3rd party ConnectIQ app (routeCourse). Why the heck this isn't natively built into Garmin's own software and hardware though, I fail to understand.

Since my last post I have been using the ELEMNT Bolt and can say it is head and shoulders above my phone running my favorite cycling app.

^ But your phone has GLONASS so the bike computer can't possibly be better

There is using Strava on an iPhone. When the first record screen comes up, there is a settings icon in the upper left and one of the options is auto-pause. :)

I switched to using a speed sensor. The gps speed was too unreliable because it was dependent on signal strength which skewed accuracy. Navigation is definitely better on the phone due to the large screen, but the Bolt does do the job. The things I like the best about the Bolt are the additional features and data that are available/customizable (data visualization), plus the ability to connect to Di2 AND (I love this) the ability to control my smart trainer and being able to virtually ride my routes without needing to connect to ZWIFT....all in one small package. Plus it automatically uploads to all my cycling apps without having to do an export and import between apps (Strava, RideWithGPS, MapMyRide, Kamoots, etc...)...to include downloading routes created in different apps).

Buy a bike computer. One incident and you ruin your phone, you'll wish you had the computer and the bike computers are easier to use, track ride statistics and have customizable screens. I prefer Wahoo

That's good. This was based on my buddy w/ Android phone, & he's pretty tech, having developed a couple of apps.

I carry a phone but usually turned off.

I only use my phone when I forget my Garmin but when I have, it's worked pretty well.
