Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chain skipping

Today it happened again.. Steep uphill and I moved past everybody and attacked out of the saddle. I was getting into a great rythm... Then clank.. Ihe chain skips, puts my cadence and my thinking out of whack and I am in too high of a gear and I mash up feeling ever pedal stroke inch the biek forward... I could distinctly feel the cahin skip in the front chain rings.. Is this is a worn chain or crank issue... The whole bike has approx 700 miles on it...I was not cross chaining, I was in the 39-15.. Triple chainring with a 12-25 cassette..

BTW Here is another post a while back which I thought that my front chainring was worn but people pointed out that it was shifting reasons...

Thanks,
-AJ

My bike was experiencing the same thing, but it has 3,000 plus miles on its latest chain and cassette. I had to replace both. It operates smooth as butter now. With only 700 miles on yours, I would think it is a bit early for normal chain/cassette wear.

It might need a good tuneup due to your chain stretching or something. Recommend you take it to a good LBS.

maybe not cleaning the chain for so long cause accelerated wear? Only time i can remember something like that happening is when i had an old used bike that had worn the chain, freewheel and front chain rings, (i knew nothing about bikes at that time) used to skip constantly when trying to climb hills. I just ended up buying something new as i recall.

Maybe the spring on the rear deraileur isn't taught enough ?

Take it to LBS, they'll find the problem, This should really be in mechanics section.

Thanks Derek, Gus
The spring is max taut... I did not clean the drive train for a long time(being a noob and all) and started doing so last week... I spaced out and should have posted in the mech forum.. LBS bound tomorrow..

I just cleaned my chain last night after letting it go too long and I am having the same problem. It only seems to rear its head when I am on the front chainring and the bigger cogs on the back. I am going to try flossing the cassette with a rag and see if it helps. I also snugged up the cable for the rear derailleur and am wondering if I got it too tight. It was annoying as hell this morning.

i used to have that problem. then i removed 2 links from the chain and it went away. i think i was just lacking proper pressure on the chain. you might try that.

I went back to work on my bike and cleaned the cassette real well and the chainrings. Then I adjusted the rear derailleur from scratch and relubed the chain. I went for a ride today and it was sweet.

If your chain measures out okay I would try the process I went through. It took about an hour and worked out great.
