Much like with many things in cycling, in the past, shoes were primarily billed as unisex but really fit males better than females. However, many manufacturers in the past few years have begun marketting and expanded their women's lineup. You should be able to find women's versions of most popular cycling shoe models.

As far as I can tell the colors are the only difference, road shoes, mountain bike shoes or running shoes.
Men's 7 or women's 9(sometimes 8.5) are my size. There is much better chance I find women's 9 than men's 7. They usually have better color scheme than men's too.
