Interesting shout from a cager

I was on my evening ride going around 25-30 mph through a neighborhood (I dont have a computer, but cars were not trying to pass me even though there was plenty of room) and as the car behind me turned onto a side street I hear "LAAAAAANCE!!!!!!" and look back to see a very goofy and enthusiastic looking teenager waving at me. I wasnt even wearing lycra!

Whether he was joking or not, I live in a Virginia suburb so this was a refreshing change from "GIT OFF TEH ROAD!" and "HEY ******"

cryogenic 07-01-05 07:07 PM

I get "SIDEWALK!" a lot :p

Its always cool when the you get supportive yells from cagers. Nice to hear about them saying something positive on occasion vs. screaming insults.

On my ride earlier today I had some jerk buzz me and scream something I couldnt understand, and a mile later a nice woman in the left turn lane told me I could turn before her car (she was in front the line). Its too bad the nice drivers usually seem to be few and far between.

cryogenic 07-01-05 07:23 PM

I actually have a pet peeve about "nice" drivers who yield the right of way to me... I don't like it at all.

hypersnazz 07-01-05 07:26 PM

I got some props like a week ago for like a 3-minute trackstand in the left turn lane at a red light. Turned, smiled, took one hand off the bars and gave him a hang-loose while still trackstanding. =)

Really? I have the same attitude although I know it is probably wrong and I should appreciate the gesture. Whenever they stop for me I think to myself, "What the &$*# are you doing? GO!" as if I was in a car too.

DocJ 07-01-05 07:38 PM

I was about ten minutes into my very first ride on my current bike, feeling optimistically good about the world, and the first car I pass after turning onto the highway was a big, jacked up truck with roll bar, mud tires, etc... and from a distance it looked like the guy was throwing me a little wave from the steering wheel (not an uncommon thing down here really). As he got closer and passed, I realized it was not a wave, but a single finger.

In most cases I wish everyone would just curteously follow the rules, especially at 4 way stops, but this didnt bother me. Maybe because I was still a little freaked out from almost getting clipped.

You can go 25-30mph solo? Wow, maybe you should be on the tour team.

An old friend likes to tell the story of the time he was riding in the San Fernando Valley back in the late 70's when he heard a "CAN YOU MOVE IT MEATHEAD?" yelled from a car behind.

When the car was able to pass, the passenger turned out to be Carroll O'Connor.

I worked with a guy in LA whose claim to fame was that he had been given the finger by three different celebrities while driving.

indie kid 07-01-05 08:24 PM

I got the same thing last sunday. I was riding past this couple walking and they said HEY LANCE!

ChAnMaN 07-01-05 08:29 PM

I got yelled at twice today, the first one was a bunch of teenagers in a old dodge that yelled "i think you droped your wiener" and another equally intelligent group called me a *****.........some peoples kids.

I was riding on my TT bike, pushing real hard doing intervals, in quite a bit of pain. As a car is passing me, the guy in the passenger seat tells me, "Dude, you gotta learn to relax!" Pretty funny - despite my pain, I laughed out loud at that one.

Could have been with a tailwind, or downhill, or just mashing like hell for a couple of miles. (EDIT: Or a TT bike)

I was riding in the lane instead of on the shoulder to get cars to go around my girlfriend and me, and one guy laid on his horn like I didn't belong on the road. I did the international symbol for "WTF" with my hand (raising my arm with the palm up and fingers not quite fully extended), at which point he hit his brakes hard 300-400ft ahead of me. I thought he was gonna get out of the car and try something, but he just sped off. He musta got a look at my well sculpted guns ;)

There was another car today that was coming towards us, and went to pass another car that was in front of them. I did the Intl. symbol for "WTF" yet again as they went flying by, to which the driver replies with a hand gesture that I think might have been a wave, and says "goonafloo aia franaflahooey!"...at least that's what it sounds like. I mean the shoulder was wide, but it's rediculous that they still go to pass when you're obviously coming at them!

I get the "LAAAAAANCCCEEEE!" and "GOOOOO LAAAANCCCEEE!" alot actually. Mostly from construction workers though. The majority of them are making fun of me unfortunately. BTW I do not were a Discovery Jersey or USPS jersey, not that they would know the difference between them and my blue salsa jersey.

Well my story is pretty borring compared to yours. I was making a left turn on a green, on one of these traffic lights where there is no official left turn lane. You are suppose to let the people going straight pass, before making the left turn. Works out nicely since there is almost no traffic. This lady was making a left turn heading towards me. She was making THE widest turn possible. She was pretty much going straight, with a left turn blinker on. I had to swerve sharply to the left to avoid her. She had almost the same expression on her face as a cow looking on to oncomming train. Heh, damn blind people can't drive.

On the same ride, I was about 2 miles from home, only flat ground in my whole ride. Let me discribe the road. It's a one lane going one way and one lane going the other. Some trees seperate the two lanes, there is a bike lane on both sides, and wide enough curb for a parking. I was on correct side of the road pedalling with traffic. Over sudden I see this three teenagers on Wal Mart barts pedaling towards me on the middle of the lane (on to oncomming traffic). Thank God there were no cars at that time. I couldn't believe their stupidity, first time I have seen that.

I've gotten some random unexpected waves from pedestrians [usually little kids... which is nice]...
Sprocket.. hehe... that's awesome...

At least you did. I can imagine all the under 35's asking themselves...."who the heck is Carroll O'Connor?"
