Anyone ever used a Flight Deck computer? I picked up a 9 speed Ultegra group today and the shifters have the wired computer. I think it’s kind of cool but the fork sensor is big and ugly. I don’t really want to use it, but I hate to cut it out. Any opinions on this? Thanks

Old tech. You either like and use them or you don't. I think Shimano must have had a ba-gillion of them made not realizing that the GPS based cyclometer was the way everyone would go. I still see them sold at some retail vendors. Certainly Shimano doesn't still make them, do they?

Yeah, they are wired to the shifters, so not only does it have speed and distance, it shows what gear your in.

Shimano makes a wireless mount for the flight deck . you will have to hunt down a the transmitter also. The wireless transmitter is also kinda ugly

The computer is wired to both shifters and the fork sensor is wireless.

I finally got a gearing indicator back with my eTap and Garmin. Happy again 👍

the wired sensor is a lot smaller then the wireless pod.
Shimano did make a rear wheel model for the flight deck

Why not just unscrew the cable from the shifters? That signal cable is replaceable.

I had a Flight Deck equipped bike back in the late '90s - early 2000's. I thought it was really cool at the time but this was before GPS based computers. Once I got a Garmin I put the Flight Deck head unit on a shelf and didn't use it again.

A previous bike of mine (DA-7800, bought in 2007) had it, and I liked both the gear indicator and the ability to control it using the buttons on the insides of the shifters. I used it even with a Garmin, forget the Edge model I had. Maybe it was the Edge 510, or the Edge 305 (?). The Flight Deck was used for speed indication, and while the Edge recorded speed not needing speed on its small screen freed up a significant amount of precious display real estate. It was also somewhat flaky in that I often had to wiggle it to restore contact. On the whole for the times it was great IMO, but I'd take Di2 and a contemporary Garmin or Wahoo unit any day of the week.

We have one on our 9-speed tandem. Love it on the tandem - can't see the chainrings or rear wheel so the gear indicator is handy. Makes me lazy though - I don't bother to keep track of shifts, which doesn't matter much on a single, but it sure does on a tandem. Other than the gear indicator, I don't pay any attention to it. IMO you could leave off the front wheel sensor if you have other displays for the same information.
