Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ramp rate as determined by training stress, which is determined by NP as it's related to FTP, which may or may not be accurate depending on workouts you're doing (NP busters, etc)? Or you can, you know, just do a little self-evaluation. I feel like ****, maybe I need a rest... I feel great, let's keep things rolling. Common sense stuff.

Phenotypes like if you're a time trialer or a sprinter isn't determined by sFTP and is determined by types of workouts/efforts you're doing.

Strengths and weaknesses against the world is called racing and/or group rides and is not determined by sFTP.

I don't think changes in FTP really matter that much. Like I said, complete the workout or not. Adjust accordingly. CP values for long-term comparison make way more sense.

Changes in W' or Pmax. Ehhh, back to competition and also not determined by sFTP.

If that's the argument for needing an accurate FTP number, ehffh. Most of those aren't "post-ride analyses" that are dependent on a particular FTP number in any case.

And still, I question the "performance" part of those metrics. More amounts to lots of graphs 99.9% of people neither care about nor utilize. I look at performance as CP or speed or actual race/ride results, which I imagine/know most do.

Yes, there are options for those who choose not to use advanced metrics. Many find the metrics more useful.

Without metrics, how can we compare our power curve wangs?

Everyone adds 6 in...100 watts anyway.

I'm 83kg, can squat 205lbs and deadlift 260lbs so I think i have strong legs? I've been cycling for 2 years but only have doing it hard for the last 8 months or so. I've done a century ride and during good weather I was doing 25 mile rides 4x a week with a 40-80 mile ride 1x during the weekend. My ftp is measured to be 118W and I just feel like that's so low? I'll average like 98W on a 1 hr hard ride while my friend who I am much faster than outside and equal weight to averages 148W on her trainer. I just dont have much to base power off of but I feel like theres somethjng wrong with my trainer since I've done recalibration several times.

Let me know if I'm just weak please🤔. Thank you!
Are you using the Sufferfest app? I've been having issues recently where the resistance is much harder than the indicated power. I'm using an Elite Zumo trainer and the PC version of sufferfest. The only fix I've found is to disconnect the trainer and then reconnect. It usually works ok the rest of the ride.

I have a Kickr and Assioma pedals and routinely compare the two. The differences are fairly small. If you want to really validate the trainer, an independent measurement of the same ride is the best approach.

+1

My coach decided my Kickr Bike and Stages dual were reading differently.
so I rode both with a borrowed set of Vector3’s.
my PM’s were within 1-2%. The Vectors read ~3w high across all power levels.

All 3 PM’s were close enough for my usage.

I miss that chart. Makes me nostalgic for 2008.

They can be over estimated or under estimated (head wind or tailwind? group or solo?) They're best ignored 100% of the time. Not worth messing with.

I thought Strava power was way-low.
so I spent a bunch of money on a power meter.
Now I know for sure I’m way-low.

🥲

Flat is even worse.

Consider this: In addition to headwinds, tailwinds, crosswinds, etc., Strava doesn't know if you're sitting bolt upright or in a time trial position. Doesn't know if you're wearing a parachute or a skinsuit. Doesn't know if you're riding on pristine pavement or rough chip and seal. Doesn't know if you're riding Vittoria Corsa Speeds or Gatorskins. All of which significantly impact your speed and the power required to go at that speed.

Sure, you can mitigate all of those with identical setups each time and the like, but at that point you're better off just using a calculator so you can specifically account for all of those factors. Or just use time itself. Probably easiest!
