At university aged 19 i was taunted for being the 'small' guy although 5'9" is of average height, being only 115lb at the times...my build was very fragile. I noticed the guys that bullied me had to have cars that were bigger and more powerfully! than the guy who got the chicks he liked. So i think it's that same old machismo thing of SIZE=Dominance, small=laughable. If you think its bad in the states you should see it here in Great Britain..there has been a boom in SUV sales especially amongst upper-middle class folk and they never use them for what they were designed for; offroad utility. They use them to drop the kids off within walking distance of there own home! With the roads being very narrower here compared to the states some ppl (especially women) having poor sense of the width of the vehicle they're driving. If your a cyclist and you ride close to the kerb I advise you thats a bad thing, if you hear an SUV coming..just pull out a little. Most accidents happen when motorists think they can 'sneek' through but end up hitting the cyclist. Many SUV drivers hate this 'right' you have of the lane and would beep and say "you should'nt ride as far out as that..prick" - says who? im a cyclist and im allowed my space, why can't they wait until the oncoming traffic has passed and then overtake? SUV's are ridden by dicks who think they own the roads 90% of the time.

Well since I've just recently taken up biking I don't have any bad SUV stories yet.
But I do have a bad Bicyclist story.
I had taken my 5 yr old daughter down the road to ride her bike. It was a one lane road with a speed limit of 10 MPH in a little residential neighborhood. My daughter was about 10 yards in front of me riding her bike. All I heard was a light buzzing noise as this cyclist passes me doing about 25 MPH. it was obvious he wasn't watching the road cause he missed me by about 5 inches or less. What followed seemed like an eternity to me.
I watched helplessly as he proceeded to ram my daughter at about 25 MPH. As I ran up to her to check on her the cyclist was laying in the middle of the road screaming in pain. My daughter was fine except for cuts and bruises. The cyclist on the other hand looked to have a broken leg and several cuts and bruises.
After I checked out and calmed down my daughter I wen over to the cyclist to check on him and give him a piece of my mind. As soon as I got to him he started cussing me and asking why my daughter wasn't watching where she was going. I was WTF?
So instead of helping him up or anything I did something stupid in a fit of rage. While he was laying there saying his leg was broken I asked him which one it was. He pointed to it ( Like I couldn't tell anyway because it was bent in an unhealthy way). I bent down and pretended to look at it. As I got up I said " you mean this one", and then kicked the living ***** out of his broken leg.
I then grabbed my daughter and walked home leaving his sorry butt where he lay screaming at me and cussing.
Oh I own a motorcycle and a SUV also.

. He was definitely wrong for going so fast and not watching out for you and your daughter, and it was worse that he acted like such an ******* after he fell. You probably shouldn've have kicked him though.

It wasn't the bike that hit my daughter adn then proceeded to cuss me out. It was the rider being an A$$ going that fast on that road. If it were a car I would have heard it and been able to get my kid out of the way. But him being on a bike made a world of diff. I didn't hear him till it was too late. If he had been paying attention there was plenty of room to go around us.
But I still don't think all cyclist are A-holes.
just trying to add a diff perspective is all.

I'm in no way sticking up for that cyclist. Just the opposite. What he did was completely wrong. What I have a problem with is that you kicked a human being while he was down. Where's the humanity? Did you do it because he was cussing you out afterwards? When I broke my leg I was cussing out the EMTs because of the intense pain! He may have been a complete idiot for doing what he did to cause the injury, but you made yourself just as worse for attacking him.

Almost got taken by a GMC Jimmy today (white), I guess on an open road with 1 lane/ direction + parking lane, riding virutally in the parking lane doesn't leave him enough room. After passing me closely, he swerved back towards the left side of the lane... very nice indeed. The Porsche Boxter following him did not seem to have the same problem.
On the topic of kicking people when they are down: You have certainly stooped to a new low, I thought stuff like that only happens in movies, or when someone is afraid for their life, not out of spite.

The way the cyclist was acting (Cussing me and my daughter for causing his wreck) just put me over the top. I was mad as Heck when it happened and originally intended to check on him after I realized my daughter wasn't hurt. But as soon as I heard his mouth, wondering if he was OK or not left my mind.
I just thank god my daughter was fine, cause if she had been hurt badly or worse I'm afraid I'd probably be in jail or sumthing now. Or if he hadn't been hurt in the accident I'm sure me and him would have come to blows over his innability to keep his mouth shut and accept responsiblity.
Anyways... I really didn't mean for this to turn like it did. I was just trying to give an example of how there are A holes in all walks of life.

You know what an SUV is good for? Driving kids to the Asthma doctor.

Sorry but that is the most asinine thing I have read in a long time. I own a Suburban and a Montero and am a avid cyclist rider. It is about convienience not ego. It is about choice. I support your right to drive your VW bug if it makes you happy and you don't expect me to drive one as well. You don't like SUV's or can't affort the gas....... ok don't buy one but please get off your high horse.

I would like to know how many people driving these small cars have ever cared for another human being - having kids makes you get a bigger car, dude, get out of your small self absorbed world. Having kids is the most altruistic, philanthropic, unselfish, continuous job in the world - actually much harder than choosing to take care of yourself and being impressed with your wonderful act of buying a Toyota Prius ! Think about it - bigger car = more people. Tying my wifes SUV to her ego is just plain stupid..... if you were my neighbor saying this I would spank you and send you to your room !

Hey if it wasn't for my SUV, my bike would have been toast yesterday when I got rearended by a minivan. Thank goodness my bike was in the back and not on the rack like the mini.

The orginal poster wondered if SUV drivers were better behaved in areas where
the potential to go off road is greater. Hell NO! I live in Seattle, less then an hour's drive from some of the most awesome recreational areas. I've come to believe that
SUV drivers only go on safari on the streets of Seattle. They all drive like ****,
yapping on their cell phones, completetely oblivious to anything/anyone else on the road. Everyone I know that actually goes in the mountains drives subaru's, saturn's,
old Jeeps, maybe. Heck I drive a ford taurus. Can you actually see yourself trying
to load a kayak on the roof of a Ford Imploder?
