Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OCP symptoms..?

last week, i took a trip to supergo to pick up a spare tube and bar tape. what happened when i walked in was something completely out of character for me. i walked straight over to the display case and started eyeing the FSA cranks. "need anything?" asked the sales dude. i didn't think so when i first walked in, but what happened NEXT was even more out of character for me -- "yeah.... yeah, i think i do." i asked to see a few of the crank sets they had and ended-up buying a set of 172.5 SL-K's(standard). the salesperson asked if i needed new pedals, and i thought to myself "i can't put my trusty-but-nasty, old scratched-up shimano-looks on these.." so i bought some black ("special color!") A5.1's to match -- and a SRAM PC-99R chain. you know...because i can't just use my almost-new-but-dirty-PC-89R.
the cranks weren't in stock at the time, so they told me they'd have them inside of a week. "no prob, i can make it that long," i thought. well...ever since then, i've had trouble getting on my bike and riding at my normal pace. i like to think it's because of the humidity, but everytime i've been on the bike, it's been difficult to stay motivated, because all i can think of is the out-of-date, crappy cranks and pedals i have on there now. i got dropped by my riding buddy the other day because of my cranks and pedals, man! funny..before last week, i was perfectly happy with my bike as a whole. it seems like every five minutes or so, i'm holding my new pedals and twirling them. "ooooh....smoooooth..." just can't wait to see how much faster these cranks will make me!

is this OCP....or something worse?

dog hair, you need to take your medicine and get a good sleep and see how you feel the next morning. It's just temporary. You can't be another OCP victim!

Since you're riding slower than normal it definitely sounds like you got OCP although I'll need more information to be sure... Were you wearing a color coordinated outfit when you were dropped? Did you find yourself wanting to just stand next to your bike and drink a latte? Does the word cyclist make you seem unfulfilled?

i don't drink coffee of any sort, and the word 'cyclist' does not make me feel unfulfilled. but on this day i was wearing a black jersey with silver/white/red trim. shorts - black with silver/red trim. shoes - white with black/red trim. helmet - white with red...black....silver....trim.....

i think i'm gonna be sick.

You may have self diagnosed early enough that there will be no lasting damage - remember, admitting you have a problem is the first step to beating it!

Forum wide plea: Are there any recovering OCP-ites who have overcome their desire to pose, primp, and act like runway models who now successfully race? Dog Hair needs your input stat!

It's classic OCP symptoms.

Would you believe I've been "riding" with my Deda Alanera bar/stem combo in my living room for almost a year?

DH--
The fact that you remember what you were wearing at the time tells me you are just about ready.
Would you like an application?
Get your references ready.

well...you see, normally, i don't worry too much about my outfit, because i ride inland where there aren't many other riders to impress. too hot, and too many hills. but on this particular day, i rode down the coast with a friend. when you ride down the coast, you have to dress the part, for on the weekends it's like going to a singles bar for cyclists. lots of cute girls decked out in full riding gear. some of them are even fast. so...you have to at least look the part even if you don't necessarily plan on playing the part.
so maybe it's just a minor OCP thing. is there such an animal?

crank update: just returned from supergo after picking up the tube and bar tape i forgot the other day. still no cranks. it's been a week already. feeling irritated.

"Riding down the coast"....sounds so nice!
Although I am on the shores of Lake Michigan as I type this in our mobile studio broadcasting live from Festa Italiana.

Nice view...but it's no SD!

Put on a Metalica t-shirt and a pair of Chuck Taylors and ride around the block as fast as you can. Drink a cup of Folgers and call me in the morning.

I don't think its an OCP condition. Your primary motivation for wanting the cranks was for improved performance while riding. Yeah, that's the ticket...

edit: Keep telling yourself that and you'll be okay....

Hip, yeah, it's great right about now if you can get past the humidity we're having. then again, being where you are, this would probably seem like a dry heat to you!

haha...
you know, when i started riding as a teenager, i DID ride around in a sleeveless metallica shirt(picture that -- riding shorts/shoes, long hair, and a "name your favorite metal band" shirt. i'd do it now if i didn't need pockets =)

and yes, i've been reminding myself since the moment i paid for the cranks that they will help improve my overall performance package. nevermind how cool they are...
HOWEVER... having said that, i do realize that there are a number of octalink/isis cranksets out there that look better than what i bought. but i figured if i was going to upgrade, i should acquire the latest technology.

so it's not ALL bad. i've retained at least a few more-or-less anti-OCP tendencies.
