Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm not even sure I'll put 13,000 miles on my car this year..

Cycling has now turned into a weekend-only activity for the most part, since it is dark now after work. A pity too since it has been so mild this week.

No, it's not. If that's how someone wants to train, then that's how they train. A smart trainer has completely changed my fitness. Even with the decreased daylight, I'm now able to do meaningful workouts and stay in a good maintenance level for the winter. Sure, I had a standard old dumb trainer for years, but I hated it and rarely used it, so I always found myself in a hole come springtime. Not this year, and not next year.

Not debating the utility of indoor training. The advent of apps like Sufferfest, which I use with my 20+ year old Performance turbine rollers, has completely changed how I train. That said, 13,000 miles is crazy in anyone’s book.

I'd say it depends on if you have to work and if you have any physical problems or limitations. I did 12K miles one year and worked full time most of the year. I think I would have done 20K if I didn't have to work when I was younger.I easily did 400 per week while I was off. I had a friend then who did 20-25k several years but he didn't have to work.
Another friend who I ride with now has done 14-15k for a few years but I think he's burned out on it. He's 57 and over 200 pounds and did over 800K feet of climbing.
