For a newbie, it probably would be a good idea to carry both CO2 and a pump. But, after you've fixed a few flats with CO2 you can probably ditch the pump.
I've ridden 20,000+ miles, carrying only CO2, and never been stranded due to the "multiple flats" scenario. I typically carry 3 cartridges (one in the inflater, and two others rubber banded together).
