Poll: Top 5 Bike Manufacturers?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Top manufacturers of certain materials how about?

Carbon= I hate to say it but Trek seems to have it down after lots of practice. I love what Cervelo is doing though.

Titanium= Litespeed, especially with their new 770gram frame, seems to know the range of Ti.

Aluminum= toss up, so many make it. I really liked Felts scandium frmaes of a few years back but since they've gone to carbon.

Steel= Not enough producers to call one great, maybe Lemond or a custom builder.

This is like asking who are the five most beautiful women in the world, everyone has a different opinion. (Allthough my wife and two daughters would be in the top 3. ) The bottom line is that it's just an opinion. Once you get to a certain level quality is no longer an issue and feel becomes what separates one frame from another. This of course is totally subjective, for example I owned an Orbea Orca and hated it. Does this mean Orcas are crappy bike? Of course not they are excellent bikes made to a very high standard. What it means is an Orbea Orca wasn't the bike for me. I can say the exact same thing about Colnago's. I've spent lot's of time on a C-40 and was very underwhelmed. Again quality bike just not right for me.

Having said all that here is my top five list in no particular order:

This is very hard because of all the reasons that you state above. We have to look then at the different frames that define a manufacturer. Here is my list...

1. Cervelo - Very distinctive TT and Road Bikes
2. Cannondale (their aluminum models not the synaps)
3. Trek - Higher end carbon bikes
4. Specalized - Higher End carbon bikes
5. Giant - Mass market bikes from out of the USA.

There are many beautiful bikes made but most of them are either too expensive, too custom or not mass marketed. Therefore I can not consider Time, Opera, Seven, Litespeed, etc on the list because you can not go to a shop and as readaly buy them...

(Now some people say that cervelo is that way...)
