Back to work after being down-and-out with COVID last week. A couple of really rough days, but doing much better since. Energy level is still down a bit, and I'm left with a lingering deep congestion in my lungs that I'm trying to clear out. Today, I'm trying to get caught up on work stuff that didn't get handled last week. I'm hoping to get on my bike tomorrow for a while - probably Zwift.

Being stuck at home last week, I spent some time dealing with some maintenance issues on my bikes, but still have an unresolved odd ping/click noise in the rear end of my Stork. I've taken apart, cleaned, and greased the rear hub, cassette, and freehub body multiple times. The cassette and chain were also replaced. Nothing seems to make a difference. The timing of the noise doesn't seem to coordinate with the rotation of any specific part. It's pretty irritating that I haven't been able to sort it out.

Is it an old wheel? Maybe spoke crossings?

The wheels are Enve 3.4s. The noise happens even when the bike is in a workstand with no pressure on the rim.

Yeah. So, for instance, I choose not to talk to my parents, who are in their 80's, about such topics. Although they are openminded for their generation, no good will come of challenging their perceptions.

Dunno, man. Tighten all bolts and check clearances? Do you get the noise if you just spin the wheel? I once had loose stuff in a wheel that made irregular noises.

To be fair, though, Carnegie and Frick don't have a Federal holiday named after them. And they're not renaming the capital city of Ohio, or that big river in the PNW, or the District Of.... well, you know.

I feel very lucky to have had the parents I did. I am sometimes glad that Dad's dementia was fairly extensive by 2017, because if he'd been aware of what was going on he'd have hated it.

I dunno, either. That's the problem. I'm a decent bike mechanic, and there are few tasks that I can't handle myself. This one has me stumped.

The noise only happens when the pedals are turning. It's baffling. I'm not even sure I can describe the sound in words. It's not typical at all. I'm 98.3% sure it's something related to the rear hub/freewheel/cassette. That said, I'm probably going to take a close look a the cranks and BB next.

We got a new milk tea spot in town, the first Fire Tiger in the US! Pretty extravagant drinks with too much sugar but pretty tasty. Fire Tiger originated in Thailand and currently has locations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

Is that tea made with cow's milk?? Or 50/50 tea/milk??

Did you swap in a different wheel?

I hate that stuff. I have a noise on the Litespeed that took me hours to identify. It was a *click* that was in time with the wheels, i.e. one time per revolution. I went over both tires exhaustively, feeling for any bulges. I rode with one brake, then the other open so there'd be no rim rubbing, even though both wheels run true and there's plenty of clearance. I re-checked the clearance at the fork crown and brake bridge, as well as the BB/chainstay area. Finally, at home, I went over the tires under really good lighting and discovered a very small cut that allows the rubber to open up ever so slightly. You can't feel it running your hand over it. But I'm pretty sure that's it. And it still makes the noise, but having figured it out, I can ignore it.
