Beer after the ride...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I remember a stage when Carlsberg Elephant beers were all the go. I'm sure that I left roughly half my brain cells behind over that time. Oh well, I wasn't using them then, but I sure could do with them now.

The wife and I have grown akin to Pyramid hefeweizen. Light enough to be a thirst quencher, but tasty enough not to give that watered down feeling.

In reality though, I usually only drink beer after a shorter or more leisurely ride. If I have been on a long hard slog, then I always go for the gatorade until the fluids are properly replenished. Then it's beer time.

Actually I have been known to fill my drink bottle with Heineken for my Friday night commute. I think I posted somewhere recently my big mistake in riding my roadie home on a Friday and ending up going over the bars with a complete flip. Twisted front end, wheel out of true and scratched shifters. I guess this serves as warning that beer is a much better after ride drink than a gatorade replacement.

It's nice having a 22 yr. old sister to buy all my beer for me. I can only imagine what I would do if I had to show up at parties and drink Bud or something...

I keep my bike and my kegerator (Red Hook IPA currently on tap) within spittin' distance of each other.

Once upon a time, Arctic Bay. Weird 11.5 oz. bottles. Weirder things when emptied.

No beer can trump Samichlaus. Lager of the Gods. Bringer of Unconsciousness.

Somebody said something about Yuengling expanding distribution on here. As a student at West Virginia University (who currently drives into PA to buy this liquid gloriousness) I would LOVE to know where that distribution is expanding to. Morgantown consumes 1% of the country's alcohol per year (no joke). I know a lot of friends of mine would be very excited at this news.

Hmm so many to try... can't believe no one else partakes of a couple of Foster's after an epic trip.

Hmmm.. Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock, Fuller's ESB, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, or about ten other deserving favorites. Used to really like Abbott Ale, but can't find it anymore. I still have a few refillable glass jugs from breweries I used to live by that bring back fond suds memories: Carl Strauss-San Diego, Brewmasters Pub-Kenosha, WI, Mickey Finn's-Libertyville, IL. Good beers.

Strangely enough I hardly ever drink beer directly after riding - just lots of water. But I do like a good beer and tend to gravitate towards the hoppier micros in my region. Right now I'm partial to Victory Hop Devil, Middle Ages ImPaledAle and Smuttynose IPA, especially if I can get the cask-conditioned (aka 'real ale') versions. For a change of pace Ramstein Hefeweizen and the Belgian-styled Ommegang beers are great. I developed a taste for cask ales when I lived in the UK, where there are too many good ones to mention. Some favorites were Cain's, Tim Taylors or Deuchars IPA....and certainly not Boddingtons in its present incarnation.
