Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just wanted to announce that I have just purchased my first lycra shorts and a jersey from Nashbar (great value). I am gonna look good, and I hope to perform just as well. We shall see when I ride after work in this 90+ degree day. No more t-shirts and basketball shorts for me!

From a dilbert strip: Problem - uncomfortable bike seat. Solution - Dorky shorts.

Buying the first pair was tough. Who wants dorky shorts? But they are better to ride in.

Well done, raehtz10. You've conquered spandexphobia! You will be riding longer, more comfortably from now on. One thing, though: please, PLEASE don't wear anything under those snazzy new bike shorts. Only no0bs who like being uncofortable put undies on under bike shorts (I admit I was one of them once!).

My wife resisted bike shorts until my dad got her a basic pair (OK I did it but my dad took credit) as a gift. Since then she's loved them so much that she has moved on to better shorts than I have!

BTW, I prefer bib shorts. Dunno what everyone else likes.

(<-- 10+ years of bike shorts and counting...)

I have a couple of pairs of cycling shorts and one jersey so far, only had the bike for 3 weeks. I wear my shorts everytime I ride now, sometimes still wear gym shorts over them. Still feel weird wearing them without something over them?! I have yet to wear my jersey though, haven't had a real need as all of my rides have been 30 miles or less so far. At what point do you feel "normal" wearing the shorts?

Congratulations on making the move! I've been riding in bicycle shorts ever since I got my bike and felt normal on day one. Never really cared what anyone thought of me anyway. I only recently got my first pair of bib shorts and WOW! Not only do they do the job of bike shorts, but they are SO much more comfortable to me. Have to get more ...

As for jerseys, I wear one every time I ride. I haven't done much in really cold weather, so that might change in the future.

Yeah, I am will be going commando under them. I did 30 miles last saturday with boxers on, and my crotch definately felt it. I have not been back on since, needed some time to heal. That is why I had my shorts shipped 2nd day.

Spent time in the Army and got used to wearing various uniforms. Cycling has a uniform. I don't mind wearing it. I would hate to have to skip riding because of avoidable discomfort or injury due to being out of uniform.

Why not wear a jersey every time? The rear pockets alone are good reason.

Before you long you are going to be buying butt creams... it is nothing to be ashamed of. I have not realized this.

Tried no underwear a few time - very uncomformtable. And I am not a newbie.

No underwear uncomfotable? Unless you mean mentaly you felt awkward.. since you knew you were not wearing anything. Otherwise the bike shorts are very tight fiting so hold everything in place. So if you were underwhere just means two layers of material everyting in it's place.. and seams are not a good thing on long rides

I generally have the willpower to choose whose opinions I consider important. The ironman triathletes' opinion of me is important, and they wear spandex, too. I feel cool because they think I'm alright. If couch potatoes don't like my spandex, it doesn't really matter to me.
