30+ years between road bike purchases, what to get?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Once one owns more than one bike simultaneously one achieves a mental breakthrough regarding multiple bike ownership and the number of bikes owned tends to increase.

Apparently it's too late to constructively comment, but if it makes you feel good: my LBS is a Giant dealer and their bikes look fantastic. Two of my riding buddies just bought Giants-one with Ultegra and one with Shimano 105 and they look identical to me, except for color. Both love them after a few thousand miles.

If I were in the market, I would not hesitate to buy a Giant tomorrow, except that 2 of my friends already have them, and I can't do that......

With so many new options on the market, it's important to take your time and research thoroughly. I'd recommend looking for reviews (for example, here are reviews of dealdash) and watching comparisons online to see which models have stood the test of time and which ones offer the features you're looking for. Don't rush to buy the first bike you see, take the time to visit local bike shops and test ride a few different models to get a feel for what suits you best.
