Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for help with a frame ID

Hello there,
New to the forum but been cycling for a while.
While I was overseas in Japan I had the misfortune to torsion my bike in such a way due to an inattentive driver on base that I ended up cracking the drop-out with the crack causing the derailleur side seat stay and stay to no longer be tied together. It has been an older no name frame that has been my foray into road bikes and I had gotten what I felt like my money's worth so I didn't sweat it and I was getting ready to transfer back to the states so I didn't worry too much about finding a new bike or frameset because I am 6'5" and there really isn't much of a market for frames that big in Japan. Now I am back I have been looking at the used market to get a replacement and found something on Facebook marketplace, unfortunately because of the rules of the forum and the fact that this is a new account I can't post the link. He says that it is a Trek Madone 6.9 but does not give year. Says it cost $8k and wants $650. It seemed like a great deal depending on the age of the bike when i first looked at it but when I was looking at other frames in that line it started to seem as if this was actually a 2011 Trek Madone 6.2 not a 6.9 based on paint scheme. Is there a definitive source for historical frames? I tried to pull up Trek's archive but that won't play along for me for some reason.
Thank you in advance for whatever help you can give.

Many times for older bikes the best way to get an idea is to look at the components on it. But only if the components haven't been replaced and are original. Otherwise beg for help with it at your local bike shops if it matters that much to you what the year is. Some might be of help, others won't want to help.

Madone 6.9 use to be one of Treks top of the line Madone back in 2008 according to this article.

Paint job and components match that?

Bikes from that time period may have a issue running the wider tires many want today. 28mm wide tires are becoming the norm and some are going to 30 and 32mm wide tires on road bikes. So if that bike will only hand 23's, you might be considered behind the times and left in the dust so to speak. <grin>

Welcome to BF!

PS.... if you can upload a picture of it to the Gallery here on BF, then just tell us it is there and we'll find it.

First and formost,, what size is it. I did a quick search on Ebay and didn't see anything over a 58, which you will need. I might not be seeing everything but a search should show something. At your height even a 60 would be iffy. His claim of over $8k is just that, a claim. It's not important.
I learned a long time ago. If the deal feels weird...Walk away. Don't take chances.
Heck there's a 60cm trek madone 4.5 Complete bike on there for 800.00 plus 28.00 to ship.

He says it is a 62cm which is why I am interested. Even here in the states finding a good bike that fits me is very tough if I don't want to special order new. I feel ya on the the walk away metric, I have gone in to a few deals thinking I had found exactly what I wanted but when I got to the equip something didn't feel quite right... Only took a couple times getting burned to learn my lesson.

Personally i an not sold on the wider tires for a road bike. I understand that there are allot of people who have really gotten into gravel and that has pushed the frame design to some extent that way the frames are a little more versatile but personally, if I'm on a trail I plan on doing dumb things and if will involve my full squish.
As far as the components go, it looks like they are all DA from that time period but without stamp numbers from the seller I can only guess. I uploaded the pictures he posted but unfortunately it doesn't include all angles especially the convenient 6.9 just above the BB. I did find a picture that looks just like it in BBB (Please don't judge, I wasn't there to figure out price, just looking at pictures and build specs as they have them) and it is spot on for the paint job for the 6.2 from 2011. I don't know, maybe trek ran the same paint schedule for a few of the 6 series... if 6.9 is printed above the BB that would be pretty definitive.
Thanks for your help.
