Don’t ever go to SD. They put ranch dressing on everything. The first day of my tour there I stopped at a burger bar for lunch. On the counter were squeeze bottles of catsup, mustard, and ranch. That evening I ate dinner at a place with a salad bar. Most of the vegetables were mixed with ranch. Saw it lots of other places, too.

Used to do group rides when I was into road bike racing more than 27 years ago. Since that time sometimes group riding in MTB and solo on the road. I have seen many people on the road not respecting safety distances or riding in parallel which can be dangerous or who are bad at emergency braking that makes it a no for me for riding in road bike groups regarding safety or unpredictability of how another unexperienced or even agressive bike rider rides.

I like ranch on pizza, cheeze curds, vegetables, fries and many other foods.

It sort of is when you’re trying not to eat so much fat. What’s wrong with things like plain old peas and broccoli?
Crossing the country we had dinner one night in a cafe in a small town in IA. The “salad” bar consisted of iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and things like potato and macaroni salads drowning in mayo. I ordered the catfish special. I had no idea it would be deep fried.

As we got further east and south the quality suffered but the quantity increased. Eventually, everything became buffet. Breakfast buffet, lunch buffet, etc. When we asked locals that's what impressed them, quantity. There were exceptions, of course.

It is better to hate group rides than for group rides to hate you.

When we toured cross country we started in the Pacific Northwest and found high quality food at lots of mom and pop type places. We would ask locals and they would share the good places.

It went downhill when we got to MN. Huge omelets and mountains of home fries. We ate out the second night at Lake Itasca, where the Mississippi River starts. The all-you-can eat fish special sounded healthy. Turned out to be deep fried perch served in baskets lined with grease-soaked paper towels. (The first night we had brats and beans because that’s all we could scrounge up at the small store near the HI Hostel.). IA and IN weren’t much better. Huge portions whenever we ate out, and so much fried food.
I actually gained weight in the Midwest. Finally decided to scale back consumption and lost it for the hills of NY and New England. My pants were really loose by the time I made it home to Philly.

I went from Seattle to Bar Harbor, ME for the first leg. Once we crossed the Rockies, we learned to ask how large the pancakes were if we ate a second breakfast because some places would serve what one waitress called “horse blankets”. Ten inches in diameter. ND was hit or miss depending on the size of the town we stayed in/near.
.
.
The best food was in the small family run places.

The trigger was coming back into the country from AB to Cut Bank, MT. The only town during the 70 mile day was just before the border crossing. By the time I and another guy got to Cut Bank we were loopy. Stumbled into a cafe and ordered pancakes. They barely fit on the large dinner plates.

I am intrigued by this new trend on the Bike Forums where a lot of threads are getting derailed by bizarre off topic content. The end result is either getting shut down by the moderators or thread smothering from a deluge of inane content.
My theory is since a vast majority of the posters are the same longtime forum members who have nothing new to add or learn.
