Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Awesome thread Trsnrtr , thanks for starting it.

I have a beloved bike with a matte finish. Always has a hint of staining due to the same factors described in the OP, but I've just shrugged it off.

This thread got me looking at solutions. In particular, White Lighting and Muc Off products mentioned above both caught my eye because I've had good luck with their products. So I looked into it with a little help from ChatGPT. Both highly recommended, but Chat suggests the Muc Off required some buffing. Ain't got time for that after every ride, so White Lighting it is.

Problem is, it's really hard to find, probably discontinued. Found one shop selling for $10, with an additional $10 for shipping. No thank you. So back to ChatGPT—any sugestions for similar products? It suggested Chemical Guys Matte Detailer, both cleans and protects (like Pedro's for gloss finishes). So I've ordered a bottle.

Figured I'd come back to add it to the last of suggested products here. Thanks again for the thread!

I stopped at a local motorcycle shop that sells Muc Off products and they told me to avoid it for the reasons stated above, too much leftover residue. They no longer stock it. If you have to work hard to remove the product, then it’s not desirable.

They actually told me that the Honda spray polish, which I used many years ago, actually works well. Spray it on and wipe it off. They were out at the time and I forgot it until today.

As Public Enemy said, don't believe the hype! Been using this for years with no issues...

There are matt finish detailing product available for bikes. They should work fine.

What I can recommend is to properly protect / seal it, such as using a car ceramic coating (it works GREAT). It will make your regular cleaning so much easier.

I have always used isopropyl alcohol. Not the fuel kind. it has petroleum distillates that leave residue.

I'd guess you would have mentioned, but this stuff has no effect on decals or painted logos etc on such?

No issues with the decals. I have a Trek Domane Gen 2 Gloss Black/Matt Black with black Trek Label. Cannot tell it is a Trek from a distance. The rest of my bikes are gloss. I use the isopropyl alcohol because it was permitted when working with carbon fiber items I worked with.

Now if you have any safety stickers still on your bike these may be affected. The ink used in the sticker may get wiped off. Mine on my Treks have not.

My vehicle has matte paint and I have a boatload of Dr Beasley's matte specific products. I just use those and they work great

Personally, I thought Muc-Off worked fine. Dr Beasley's was better.

But don't you want the bike smelling lemony fresh?

Funny. We just have a lot of them as my wife buys them in bulk from Costco for her car's interior. She has snow white leather and the unscented ones are recommended by her dealer. Most anything else can stain or discolor.

So I picked up this bottle of Chemical Guys Matte Detailer from Amazon that I mentioned in post #26 above. Finally got around to cleaning up the frame with it tonight.

The greyed-smudged factory logo is back to white for the first time in years. The bike hasn't looked quite this good since it was new, and I clean it after every ride. Pretty happy I stumbled into this thread!

IMO clean gently like you would with regular paint with a microfiber cloth and light cleaning solution. I will say there are such different grades of matte. The matte on my previous Aethos or Canyon Ultimate was livable, but the matte on the rear of my Addict RC that I actually just returned was horrible, since the paint was uber porous and the paints strength was terrible, thus oil or any dirt would stick to the bike and couldn't just be wiped off like other matte paint and two any kind of minor abrasions would leave indentations, in contrast other matte paint was pretty solid

There's a product that I've yet to try but have held an informative conversation with the store SME. it's made by 3D & they supply detailing products for automotive & marine applications.
id look them up & send them an inquiry. They used to be out of California, now they're out of Farmington MI iirc.
