Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

(ok Ive just contributed to this mess)

So the Air National Guard is not the real thing??? I know some good ol boys over there right now flying close air support, and MAC who are "weekend warriors" (I'll use the pharse for you) that might want to disagree with you. Lot's of people's daddy's paid their way through college...tell me this, how did Kerry get his degree paid for? I don't know, maybe you can enlighten me.

Point of fact: At the time of the Vietnam war, 3% of pilots from the TNG went to Vietnam. At that time, it was an obvious place to go to avoid fighting in the war. There is no dispute over this fact. There is also no disputing that it is vastly different today. The Air National Guard is absolutely the real thing - both then, and now. The difference is that you will actually go to war if you join thier ranks today.

Nobody has my respect, and gratitude more than these brave folks who sign up for duty knowing that they will be smack dab in the middle of harms way - nobody.

Anyone know why Bush gets to set the pace each time he does a ride?

Well Bush seems to wreck alot and if everyone got ahead of him or behind him..

It could be bad when he wrecks and no one is there to help him up.

OK newsflash to everyone who is defending bush. Please, understand, that Kerry lost the election. Most of us were not real excited about him anyway, the exciting candidate was destroyed for getting to excited. You no longer have to mention Kerry in your defense of the president.

mmmm… I think this bit puts it all into perspective - I wonder how Lance felt about it, and I wonder what would have happened if he'd had a momentary lapse of control, and left The Leader Of The Free World in the dust (along with all of the SS Agents & Minions)… interesting, wot? Go Lance!!!

MMMMMMM....the Bush twins in Camies......very, very, very, very, nice.........MMMMMMMM

You guys can argue back and forth all you want, the truth of the matter is that nobody knows what the truth is. History will be the biggest indicator on if this little adventure was worth it. (By adventure I mean not only Bush, but the Iraq war) Time has a way of filtering out the retoric and 'spin zones'. So I say we just leave it for right now and we can resume the debate 20 years down the line when the big picture becomes a little clearer.

Now back to the Bush twins doing a pat down in cammies.......MMMMMMMM......

Wrong. This was a put up job to get Dean out of the race. He did sound like a fool in the clips which were broadcast - yelping at nothing, but that wasn't a true depiction of what was really happening. He was leading a cheer, but the strong directional mics only picked his voice up. If you were there, you heard that he was leading cheering. The crowd would shout, then he would, then the crowd and so forth. But the way the mics picked it up, it seemed he was yelling into silence.

It was a full on paste up chop job. And in case you think this is coming from a Dean partisan, I'm a right wing libertarian Republican. But I know a chop job when I see it.

Despite my leanings, I think Dean and Mosely Braun were the quality of that field.

Somehow, the thought of certain presidents cycling paints a funny picture in my brain:

George Washington on a road bike.
Richard Nixon on a mountain bike.
LBJ on a comfort bike.

But, unless some of you people have concrete evidence of anything you guys are saying, just shut up. I have been to Iraq and Kuwait. The only form of transportation over there isnt bikes and camels. As a matter of fact, a status symbol among the Kuwaiti people is a Chevy Suburban. You see more of them on the road than anything. Everyone (not really everyone) in Baghdad has a vehicle, and it has an engine, not four legs or two wheels.

I find it easy to take news stories, combine them into one and post what I "know" too. That seems to be the deal here. No, the military isnt a draft based system anymore, but does that diminish the mothers right to be upset that her son died?

And where do you get off saying that Kerry is a bonafide war hero? Sure, he has three purple hearts, but two have been documented for self inflicted wounds. When I was in Iraq last year, I had a mortar land about 40 yards from me while I was stationed in Fallujah. I almost $hit my pants, can I get a purple heart and be called a bonafide war hero?

Some of you tree huggin, left wing hippies make me sick. I am a republican, but like the other poster, I dont always agree with what the republican party does. Just like I would tell you that you dont agree with everything the democrats propose.

I have said enough. I am not angry with anyone on the boards here. That is what makes this such a wonderful country to live in. The fact that we are able to choose different sides like this. I will say this though, if you arent happy with what is going on here, leave. I'll even by your plane ticket, just send me a PM.

If you don't like the way the country is going - vote and shut up. Or better yet run for an office and do something about it.

Let's get back to cycling.

I wonder if we can get the President to lobby congress for more funding for commuter bike lanes and riding trails?

Presidents work a lot even when on "vacation." Their advisors are there, dignitaries pay visits, Congressmen drop in, etc. Even when they are out on the golf course, riding the trails, or jogging down to McDonalds, the President is usually talking with someone about politics. Lance undoubtedly made his case for more cancer research while he was there.

Funny how all the chickenhawks want to send other people's kids into harms way. If there was conscripted service we would not even be having this banter.
