Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Failed...Need help!

Well once again my plans have failed...

I was planning on riding in the mornings(5-6:30 am) since I have work/school and absolutely no other time.

Commuting is out of the question. I don't have enough time to travel from one place to the other

Night riding is out of the question. I wear contacts and I need to wear my sunglasses so I can see and my contacts do not dry up. Night riding with sunglasses = no visibility. I also don't want to carry lights and all sorts of other gear so I really prefer not to ride at night

Trying to get up at 4:30 has failed me miserably. I tried really hard for 2 days and with no luck. Riding 7 days last week really helped me and I would like to continue to train during the week instead of just Fri/Sat/Sun.

What I am thinking about is buying a trainer...I don't know too much about them but I have been readnig your advice on the forums. Can I purchase a trainer from a semi-large LBS? Should I just buy it online? Im expecting to pay 150-300 so I don't want to go crazy with one.

I hope this helps me

Thanks guys!!!!

Night riding shouldn't be out of the question. Get a pair of sunglasses with changeable lenses and use the clear lens at night. I do this a lot in the fall and winter months.

These are my glasses:

And why do you need to carry "all sorts of other gear" at night? I don't carry anymore at night than I do during the day. I do have a front and rear lights but they're not massive; so, they add little weight to the bike. Something like this...

Headlight:

Night riding is fun, and DEK gave great advice.

Just a note: Don't buy the Performance Vega sunglasses. I have a pair and the lenses have multiple cracks around the edges (not from flying debris, either). I might be afraid of other Performance sunglasses, but maybe I just got a bad pair or something.

Riding at night is a nice change of pace. It's very calm and relaxing. Don't rule it out so easily.

If you want to go the trainer route, this is a good deal and everyone seems to love them: https://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=16127

As another option, you don't have to ride 7 days a week. Make an effort to get up early maybe 2 days a week. Sounds like a good compromise to me.

glasses like that won't help me much because air passes through the lenses and right into my eye. Its kind of annoying if you wear contacts. If its too windy out, Im not riding because of all the wind that gets into my eyes and dries up the contacts. I have -2.75 in both eyes so I need them to be able to see well and avoid obstacles

I have been wanting to get a trainer for awhile. Im not sure if I should dish out the money for a CycleOps Fluid2 or just buy a cheapo for now...Should I try to buy something like this from a LBS? I have a 10% discount at one semi-large LBS that I usually go to...

What do you guys think ? Im trying to rule out night riding due to safety and annoyance. That and I come home at 10ish so I probably wont be riding until 11ish

Since you're considering droping some $ on a trainer, why not consider getting some regular glasses that you can wear on night rides?

Just an idea. I wear contacts during the day, but wear my glasses for rides to prevent contacts from drying out.

Too bad the 4:30am thing didn't work out. I know how it goes though, I too would have issues getting up that early to go riding every day. Now that hunting season is coming up though I'll be back at it, up at 4am, in the woods well before light trying not to get stabbed in the eye from a tree branch. good times. good times.

To be a bit more on-topic, you could get glasses that have changable lenses, then use clear lenses.

Isn't it dark at 5:00 a.m. in California? Get some glasses, as they will serve you long after you come to realize that riding a trainer indoors is excruciatingly boring. Night riding is a great experience. You will like it.

I have a few pairs of good glasses but I don't like the feeling of wearing them. Its dark at 5:00 but it gets pretty light towards 6 and 6:30.

I really don't like night riding due to the lights I have to carry, stupid drivers at night, unable to see potholes due to contacts getting dry and glasses don't provide the greatest visibility because they are small(I just keep glasses just incase I have to change contacts or go in for some kind of medical treatment where I dont want to deal with contacts for that day/week)

Ok, which trainers would you guys suggest? I need to get fluid because my brother will kill me if he hears magnets or a fan going the whole night

Night riding is the best and most fun time to ride IMO. With the proper lighting it can be fun and exciting. I perfer to ride at night now vs the morning, it makes the whole day much calmer... and is cooler...

What about spin-classes at the local health-club. Here, the people start queuing up around 5:30 to be first in to get a spot in the 6am spin-class...

Dude, buy some glasses with larger lenses and ride whenever you want. Ditch the contacts for bike riding. I wear glasses all the time.

Or, get lazer eye surgery.

Or, wake up at 4 am.

Or, buy a trainer.

Do something...even if it's wrong.

good lord, the kid wants a trainer, just tell him to get a trainer.
performance -Cyclops Fluid 2 $240 -20% coupon and maybe 99cent shipping if its still available.
It was $220 a week ago but it just went up.

You'd end up with a fluid trainer for about $200.

I have the 1up trainer: quiet but $300. If I had to do it again, I might end up with the Cyclops for $100 cheaper. Yeah, it can be boring but just turn on the tv or something. You can also ride then when it gets cooler out. Winters in California are really mild but its relative to what you're used to. I grew up in LA and thought it was cold out during the "winter" there... then I moved to the east coast and found out what cold really was. You might wanna just sit inside on your trainer when its wet or or uncomfortable out.

Clear glasses = $7 (search ebay for "safety glasses")
Decent light set = $50

So, why aren't you out riding...?
