Various Thoughts from a Newb
I learned some stuff. Nothing beats learning from experience.
Firstly, cars give you more respect and tend to not honk at you as much if you use hand signals, very useful, especially riding in metro-suburban areas like me.
Getting more courageous when it comes to riding on fast mph roads with no neck. But I still get edgy when I'm riding on single or double lane (little or no traffic lights) roads. Cars go like 40-50 mph on some of these roadways near me. Yet these are the ones that are the best.
Morning riding rules especially now with school and homework. DAMN!
Yesterday evening tried riding with my ipod shuffle. Bad idea. As much I need to feed my urges for 2pac, I need to pay more attention to the traffic. I won't be riding with an ipod anytime soon.
Told you these were various thoughts.

Excellent observations. You're on your way. I used to commute in Boston (Southie/Financial District and East Cambridge/Financal District). I always felt the safest taking a lane in traffic. Boston's a great city to ride in; it's not tough at all to move faster than the cars.
Ixnay on the ipod -- I, too, thought that was a great idea for like 10 seconds. Only my music of choice was Fugazi.

i must be crazy. haha, i dont even have 250 miles on my bike (had it for a little over two weeks) and im brand new. but alot of the rides i take i go from my house, then i go on rides out into rt 84 and alot of other roads that are 45-55 mph. i dont really worry too much, not many close calls. i mean the way i figure it, if i get hit in the back on a 50 mph road, its actually only like getting hit standing still by a car going 30-35 :-/ eek. but i donno i dont worry too much when im out there cause i usually do alright.

i like using my ipod to commute in the morning (cambridge to financial district) and as long as you pay attention to whats around, it seems fine to me. i guess i may learn my lesson the hard way, but my commute is only 4 miles. i usually ride alone, so the only hand signals i use are for significant turns. i would like, however, to start participating in group ride, they seem like fun. i guess im just more comfortable or crazy, however you want to put it. when cars pass me, i try and keep up. have fun.
