Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So a group of roughly 9 or 10 of us are doing a normal route that has "share the road" signs all over the place, aswell as plenty of width to the road at this particular point. After coming around a turn and heading up an ever so sligh slope the group is still pulling along at roughly 38-40kph (23-25mph), anyways at the top of the slope, maybe 500m away (0.3miles) there's one of those gradual turn offs to a ramp that leads to a highway. So we're going good and steady, no sprints or anytning and this car just gradually comes up next to use and gets right next to the lead rider (i was 2nd from the back a this point) and he puts on his blinker as we approach the middle/ end of the turn off to the ramp, next thing i know some guys are slamming on the breaks, i hear some yelling an the car practially comes to a stop while half the group continues to ride, while me and another person check behind us and proceed around the car cause we had the room.

This kind of thing happens all the time and it just pisses me off, dumb motorist who seem to have no grasp on predicting movment of an obstacle and lack of depth perception.

Luckily for the motorist we didn't have one of the older racers there tonight who,, shall we say, has no problem expressing his opinion to ignoratn driver's

I guess "i should be happy" that the motorist didn't decide to show off how well he can push a rubber pedal and try to speed past us and cut us off trying to make his turn infront of the group.
In the end, although it's the most annoying for both parties, having a vehicle trail behind you waiting for you to move out of the way for a turn off really is the safest thing, but so many motorist's are so impatient, and seem so upset cause they have to take their foot of the gas pedal for 3 or 4 seconds GOD FORBID!!!
[/end rant]

they had to press on the brakes for 10 seconds, their fat legs are not capable of such a task. You should never ride in their path again!

Well, this clears up something I've wondered for a while: What's the riding like in Nova Scotia?

Jeez, they have the same problems as we.

So what's it like on P.E.I.?

Seriously, that's my next road trip.
As for your incident, though, that's a common one: motorists accelerating like mad to get ahead of something they ASSUME should be moving slower than it actually is. And then turn right.

mmmm i could just smell the lawsuit... new team bikes all around

I've never been to PEI but it's not that big a place, and it's a vacation spot with all kinds of trails and stuff so imagine cycling is pretty big there for tourist's and such, i duno about the roads though. Cabot trail is supposed to be a little bit better.

I just thought of another time this happened actually, going thru downtown, pretty much same conditions, car behind me going for the turn off ramp, but i just keep following the dotted line cause i'm going straight, then he just lays on the horn and starts yelling cause apparantly i'm in his way "" "" , of course i don't even look (cause i'm paying attention to the road ) and just give him the finger, then he start's yelling even more while he makes the turn off ramp behind me "you wana ****ing ride something, here, ride this you mother ****er!!!" i'm not sure, but he might have given me the finger back.

I think there just needs to be better education on who has the right of way and when on the roads. Also teach both cyclist AND motorist's how to share the road, this stuff should really be covered in driving school, THOUROUGHLY, not just a 2 minute talk "watch out for cyclist's, cause you could kill them".. well gee, that's a good bit of rocket science i'm sure glad they informed me off. Even a short 10 second commercial demonstrating one or two scenario's and what TO DO, would be a big help if it got a little air on the local station's here.
