Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Magnetic Spoke

I wonder if wheel makers could put a magnetic spoke on each wheel that could be used instead of attaching a little magnet to a spoke for the bike computer? What do you guys think?

You could possibly magnetize one of your own spoke. Stay away from realy high grade stainless they wont magnatize.
Not surehow strong the magnet need to be though.

wouldnt that just magnetize the whole wheel then? when you have a magnet, and you pick up something like say, a nail, you can then pick up additional objects off of that first nail.

No at most youd end up with one strongly magnetic spoke and one thats a very week magnet. Remember aluminum magnesium and ti are all magnetic insulaters. High end magnetically shielded computer speakers are surounded with aluminum. It doesnt completly block magnetic fields of course but it cuts it way way down. Wraping the spoke the magnetic one touches with aluminum foil at the contact point would be enough to stop any magnetic field that would transfer to the spoke it touches.

Great idea! I can't believe it's not been thought of before. If anyone tries it let us know how it goes. I can't tell you how many of those darn magnets I've bought over the years

Why not just come up with a micro electronic photo-eye? Then just program the number of spokes you have on that wheel. The photo-eye can count the number spokes per revolution and calculate from that.

I tried magnetizing one of my bladed spokes but it didn't work--spoke became magnetized but the computer couldn't read it.

That said, if you had access to a strong enough magnet (old speaker magnet?) it really *should* work (with carbon steel spokes).

I bet if you magnetize two of them you could go twice as fast!

Perhaps rim wear indicators could be embedded magnets, and sensors could be built into all carbon forks. Computer cables would simply plug into a port on the fork. I hereby patent this idea.
