Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

spd shoe pedal compatibility

Are Shimano mountain bike pedals (cleats) compatible with Shimano SPD road shoes? It looks like there's a different bolt pattern. Is there an adapter to let you use a shimano mtb cleat and pedal with a shimano road bike shoe?

Crank Bros. sells an adapter to let three-bolt shoes accept the two-bolt SPD cleats.

Many road shoes support both 2 and 3 bolt cleats without an adapter.

Shimano SPD mtb & road pedals use the same cleat. SPD-SL uses a different 3 bolt design that works with shoes designed for Look pedals. Many shoes will accomodate SPD and Look though.

You might run into problems clipping in and out of some SPD road pedals with mtb shoes and you might not be able to mount Look style cleats on some mtb shoes.

The mtb pedals should work fine on a road bike though even with road shoes so long as the shoes are SPD compatible.

Just a note: you shouldn't mix mountain bike pedals with road shoes because the cleats are (usually) designed for the recessed mountain bike shoes. On a road shoe they would be unprotected and wear down really really fast. As mentioned there are adapters available so if you already have road shoes this is a good option, but if you are buying shoes, just buy mountain bike shoes.

Anyone else notice that the new Shimano shoe don't support their own original SPD 2 bolt patern any more talk about...they said the look pattern was dead...whos using it again?

sorry I will not do a Shimano rant just an observation.
