Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

best bike for 5k

hi, im new to this.
at the moment i have a trek oclv 5500, that i race competitiely at a national level. This bike has been good, although i need to upgrade because it is now too small, as i am 15 years old and still growing. i would rather get a whole new bike, than to swap all the running gear onto a new frame. What do you think the best thing to do with only $5,000 is. I would prefer to have the latest dura ace on it.
any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Cameron

At 15, if I were you, I'd take most of that money and invest it.

Fuji_cyclist is back!

Seriously, there are so many great bikes out there at that price point or much much lower, I don't think there is a useful answer to the question. As you are "15 years old and still growing", I think spending $5K is a bit silly.

But, if you or your parents have the scratch, then get a Madone / Orca / TCR / Advanced / CR1 / Synapse / Vortex / Extralight / Axiom / Tete.

But don't get a steel frame, they suck. (Asbestos underwear - check).

He said his sponsors gave him 5K to spend on a bike. I would ask what the sponsors would prefer you to have instead...

But, my vote goes to an Orca, or the new Opal. But then again, I am partial to Orbeas.

How much money did your sponsors give you for gear/food(gels, etc) and travel? I would spend more money on those items(which are often overlooked) than on the most expensive frame you can find.

15 y.o. and $5k burning a hole in your pocket...I am jealous.
Seriously, my opinion is that you need to satisfy the sponsors AND get the best bike for you. If the 5k is for the bike only, you will get votes for every top shelf bike out there so take that with a grain of salt. Find the bike that feels the best to you.

Good Luck!

oops, you posted that while i was typing. Still, get the bike that feels best to you, all the different recommendations might be overwhelming.

Go with your gut feeling.

What sponsor isn't obligated to a bike company in one way or another? If you are on a team...do you all ride different bikes?

LOL @ this guy.

He's new to this, but he's got an OCLV 5500 that he races at a national level. HAHA. You're definitely an amateur troll.

Get the R-84 frameset and build it. Click on "R84".

Well, God bless and good luck with that. Obviously, there are some great sponsors out there that truly believe in your talent and are willing to invest in your future. I wish more sponsors would do that for kids-we'd probably have a much bigger pool of great cyclists, and maybe the face of cycling here in the USA would be a bit different... even better, probably.

I would lean towards a Pinarello myself. Those bikes seem sooooooooo nice... or maybe a Fondriest. Or check into a Serotta if you can get them to squeeze you a bit more money. The Serotta would be nice because they would make it custom for you, and I bet that bike would work best for you.

Keep us updated and let us know what you decide with. Do you have a coach yet, or are they going to provide that too?

The Pinarello Dogma is a sub $5000 bike- https://www.cbike.com/pinarello_dogma.htm

Yeah... it's the frame only, but perhaps you could outfit it with components and ask for a break in price. Or wait until they go on sale, since it's going on wintertime, and buy it even cheaper.

I don't know where you live, but if you're not in the Chicago area, find out who your authorized Pinarello dealer is and ask what they can do for you if you buy the Dogma.

That Dogma is such a sweet bike, just look at the fork and seat stays, bella, bella!! But, and it's a big but, it's frame is magnesium alloy, have you ever seen that stuff burn? If you do it will leave a lasting impression. If you are riding and it torches, kiss those $200 bib shorts good bye, among other things.

I saw MacGyver make a blowtorch out of a magnesium alloy bike once... Two security guards were trapped inside of an armoured car along with a large amount of cash... the bad guys decided that they were going to use explosives to open up the armoured car but MacGyver persuaded them to let him give it a shot since explosives would kill the people inside... So what he did was he grabbed some guys racing bike and cut it down with his pocket knife... he then proceeded to shave off some material off of one of the tubes and pack it all into another tube... when he was done he lit the end of the tube and was able to cut his way through the door... After that the two security guards jumped out and thanked MacGyver and the bad guys pulled out their guns and killed them!...
