There is a difference between wearing your favorite football team jersey and something that has a bunch of corporate logos on it. You wouldn't wear a jersey to play turkey ball with a big "Sears" logo across the front. Unfortunatley most European sports cover their jersey with these corporate logos. Wear what you like but I don't understand why people want to turn themselves in to billboards.

I don't care about professional soccer in anyway whatsoever, but I believe there is a good comparison to be made.

Not that I have the time or interest to do it myself.

smoothleg 10-16-05 09:23 PM

But, does the average joe have any idea what the professional team sponsors are actually advertising??

Those are pretty pictures, but I could never imagine wearing something like that. They kind of remind me of those 70's disco shirts.
On the other hand, I wear either a solid red or blue jersey with black shorts. Someone pointed out the other day that I looked like the new guy on Star Trek that you know is going to die.

caloso 10-16-05 11:44 PM

Feh. When I first started riding, I went out an bought a Postal jersey. Then I found out that some riders thought I looked like a ****er and some thought I looked like a poser. So I went out and bought some plain jerseys. And the more I rode the more I realized that any rider worth his salt really doesn't care what jersey you wear if you can pull the train, close up the gaps, and chase down the breaks.

So, ride your bike hard and wear what you like. Personally, now my favorite jersey supports my alma mater's cycling team:

That reminds me I have this SWEEEEET polyester Star Trek shirt I got as a halloween costume a few years ago (I went as a Treky with the broken glasses & everything). I should bust that out for a group ride sometime for a good laugh, it fits exactly like a long-sleeve jersey and even has a zipper.

I have one team jersey originally bought in '95. Its a Rominger era Sportful Mapei-Clas. Still has never been worn. I'll wear it if I someday acquire a NOS Colnago BiTitanio (yea, right).

Nope. Plain is fine for me too. OK - I have an old Raleigh jersey that I bought too, but I only wear it rarely.

jackb 10-17-05 11:56 AM

I not only wear plain cycling jerseys, but I wear plain everything. In general, I do not buy a piece of clothing or gear if the logo of the manufacturer is clearly visible. I've been know to sit for twenty minutes or so with an article of clothing and a stitch puller removing labels and logos of various sorts. I see know reason to advertise anything and I make no statements through the clothes I wear or the gear I use. I have nothing to say to anyone that I don't know or the public at large. When i buy a bike, the first thing I do is try to remove all removable stickers and decals. A person would be surprised how nice some things look without words and logos plastered all over them.

Figures a cannondale guy is partial to baggies

jrennie 10-17-05 01:25 PM

What is with all the focus on jerseys, when did you last get a check for driving you ford/wearing your levi's/riding a trek? You don't like looking like a billboard and thats ok but if someone else dosen't have any issues with the logos then that is their decision.

BTW I wear plain jerseys

Milford Bob 10-17-05 01:57 PM

bbattle what is the brand of that 1st jersey. Looks good.

I like the team shirts because I find them interesting and
they are colorful and as mentioned before they stand out
better for drivers to see me.

Can't we all just ride our bikes and get along?

Obviously not. Otherwise, what purpose would BF serve?

When i play Bball i wear a jersey that says "NIKE" on it. Doesn't mean i am Air jordan out there. I wear Chucks doesn't mean i can pass like magic, I have a arm warmer on doesn't mean i can do a cross like Alley I. And when those clothes have gone through there life cycle, what ever is on sale i will wear that onto the court.

I like em plain, too - was considering getting a couple "print on it yourself" jerseys...
I rarely see a one that I like. All too often the color scheme or arrangement of elements on the garment just makes it look cluttered, ugly.

But if I had the spare cash I would have also gotten this, with the assumption I would get run off the road a lot less if I was pimping America.-

"I would get run off the road a lot less if I was pimping America"

That might depend on what state you ride in, here on the left coast that jersey might just get you run over.

Just found this out about plain jerseys. They show stains REAL well.

My favorite at the moment are the more fashionable plain jerseys like the Castelli Simple Jersey. The Assos is sweet but way too $$ for my taste.

caloso 10-17-05 02:39 PM

Those Castellis are sharp. I may have to put in an order with Santa.

Huffer 10-17-05 02:50 PM

I've got to admit that I hate wearing clothes with huge logos and text for shoe companies or whatnot, but I don't mind wearing stuff that supports small companies or causes (e.g., Life Is Good, an MS150 ride, whatever) or favorite teams. If I could find them for under $25, I'd probably pick up a Discovery Channel jersey - they're pretty understated compared to most.

I wear some generic CoolMax stuff most of the time (who really needs pockets for a 25-mile spin?), and I have one jersey, a plain gray Pearl Izumi that I found on clearance. I'll keep checking the clearance racks, and whatever catches my eye will wind up in my closet.

I hope I'm never snobbish enough to care what others are wearing. I care more about whether they're decent and courteous enough to get the hell out of my way and not suck my wheel without asking. :)

Yum, those look tasty. I'll do a search shortly, but any ideas on the best price on these beauties?

I'd be interested in finding a better price if someone knows of one... the long sleeves are all on backorder from Colorado Cyclist.

If you can find Castelli stuff for cheap, jump on it. I know World Cycling Productions carries Castelli gear.
