Jersey Rant

Am I the only person who wears a plain jersey? I see a lot of people in t-shirts, granted, but most of the people I see wearing actual cycling tops have some kind of corporate advertisment or team logo on their jersey.

Now, if Vorizon, the Postal Service, or any other corporation (except Guinness beer) want me to advertise for them for free by riding my bike with their logo on it, they had better pay me. Or at least give me the jersey for free.

It costs like 5 cents to make a jersey. So why don't companies give them out for free?

spinnaker 10-15-05 04:11 PM

Well I'm sure they cost more than 5 cents but I otherwise agree with you.

I am trying to get my own company to fork over some jerseys for next years city ride (which they sponsor). So far nothing. I guess they spend too much on jet fuel to fly those execs out for their golf games. :)

Univega 10-15-05 04:25 PM

I usually buy what is cheap and I like.

I often wear my Univega team jersey. Why? I was in a bike shop in Chicago with a friend
(I live on Long Island). The jersey had a price tag, List $79 marked down to $67. I asked
how much he wanted. He said $25.00. I took it.

That is the one thing I have noticed about this forum, cloths (yellow jerseys, Discovery jerseys,
team jerseys) cause more emotion than other sports. I would never see people ask if it was "OK"
to wear a Giants jersey.

I wear what I can afford and like. If you see me and "drop me" because you have a problem with
my Univega team jersey, I don't know what to tell you. This isn't directed at MrCjolsen, just something
I have noticed. Other than jerseys, people will bend over backward to help you with any other issue.

timhines 10-15-05 04:25 PM

Preach it brother

TheKillerPenguin 10-15-05 04:29 PM

I wear my team jersey because, well, they gave it to me gratis and it's comfy :) I'm glad to represent my team, and I don't mind representing the businesses that are on the jersey.

Before I was on a team though, I wore a plain grey and yellow jersey with a discreet, barely visible logo. I don't like being a billboard, especially when I'm paying for the clothing in the first place. I don't have logos on any of my non-cycling clothing either.

bluecd 10-15-05 04:39 PM

i have 6 short sleeve jerseys & 2 long sleeve. all plain. i did order a Sol Cervesa jersey though & i am looking forward to my first logo. also my LBS owners have designed some logo jerseys and i will wear one of those because they are great guys & take good care of me.

Mojo Slim 10-15-05 05:18 PM

I have both plain and fancy. I, too, get what's on sale. Some are tight, some relaxed. If you are layering during fall/winter rides, too many patterns can cause spontaneous combustion!

That's because people don't wear the Giants jerseys while they are playing football. It is a fan thing. But wearing bicycle team jersey while cycling is something else.

If you're good enough, lots of major corporations will pay you to wear team jerseys. If you're some bald fat hybrid rider, do you think they really want you to represent the corporate image?

Jerseys do not cost 5 cents to make. If they did, the cheapo jerseys from nashar.com would be a lot cheaper.

bigbossman 10-15-05 05:34 PM

I wear whatever jerseys I find at Goodwill..... :D

Pizza Man 10-15-05 05:42 PM

When I started a few months ago I only had one Jersey that I wore for every ride. It's plain blue with a very small logo. A friend asked me to join his team (no cost to join) and gave me a free team kit with jersey & bib shorts. So, since it was free I don't mind being a billboard. I wouldn't buy a pro team jersey such as Discovery though, unless of course they asked me to join their team =)

af895 10-15-05 05:53 PM

I'm with Univega and bigbossman. If it's on special or I see it at the Sally-Anne and I'm in the market, it's mine. These days, I only have generic Coolmax shirts for riding. I wouldn't have any objection to a T-Mobil jersey though. (I just wouldn't spend $200 on one ;)

Side note: I was reading an interview with Lance Armstrong where someone was asking him about yellow jerseys and he admitted he had perhaps hundreds of them just to give to friends and such - they're handed a bunch of extras with each win. If he gave me one, I'd darn well wear it.

And then I'd silk-screen "bike Forims - ROLF MAO" on the shoulder.

voltman 10-15-05 05:58 PM

Who cares if people like pro jerseys? Is this reverse snobbery?

http://www.cannondale.com/clothing/0...odel-5G14.html
And some baggy shorts. to match the jersey. I had tight shorts just didnt like the feel.
I ride cannondales and ill advertise that fact with pride heh.

mscycler 10-15-05 06:30 PM

I wear a Stone Runiation IPA jersey...

Why??? BEcause I am arrogant:D. Nah, just kidding. I like the beer, and I came home from work one day and the wife had it hanging in my closet. good jersey, better wife.

timhines 10-15-05 06:31 PM

I'll chim in again...

If I can get a pro jersey at the same price as a regular jersey, I might buy it. I have about 8 or 9 jerseys. All are plain except for my Cycle North Carolina jersey (which I paid way too much for, but it was a nice souvenir)

SteveE 10-15-05 06:32 PM

I've got some plain wool jerseys from the late 70's and early 80's!

I also have my team jerseys. Some of the corporations, whose names are on my jersey, wouldn't give the club money if we wouldn't put their name on it. Most clubs give you the jersey in exchange for your membership dues. Club discounts usually more than offset the cost of membership.

The real question is "Why do you care what other people are wearing?"

That's not a kit. That just a billboard for Cannondale.

I don't get the people who wear pro team jersey either. The only reasons pros/racers wear them is becaused they get paid or free stuff in exchange. You've just been suckered into advertising for free. I don't understand people who wear any clothes with big logos on them. The only time I can see it is if you have LBS you want to show your support for. But then again the BS should give you the jersey to thank you for your business and for spreading the word for them.

hi565 10-15-05 07:20 PM

Oh, I have all free jerseys :)

I love having people I know have extra jerseys that they dont use or dont fit, and they always know I will take em :D

pedex 10-15-05 07:34 PM

plain tshirts work fine, I dont own any jerseys, no need, tried once, they get shredded in about 3 weeks of work

someone wants to sponsor me, I might consider it, Id be happier with a tshirt with my company logo on it though

Heck my closest local bike shop already cuts me good deals. I dont think ive paid the tax on stuff in his shop well ever realy. I always send him buissness.
Often times i get little discoutns here and there 5 or 10% off about every time. Got a 49 dolor pair of lake shoes back in the day kind of a cross type shoe. Real stiff soles non cleated for 19 bucks out the door. Not on special or clearance. I loved those shoes heh had them for a good 5 years. They just would not ware out. The sould finaly cracked about mid soles on both then i glued up the crack and used them for another 3 or 4 months like that.

Tubes tires etc 5 or 10% off tax includeed in price etc. Id say over the last 22 or 23 years (im 33 now been in to various forms of cycling sence i was 11 or 12 in a more serious way) ive saved a good 2 grand in his shop easly. If he has a jersey for his shop one of these days ill buy it. It dont bother me one bit to toss 50 or 60 his way.

/me laughs at spelling soles souls ...
Seriously does any one else absolutly hate when they do that.

bluecd 10-15-05 10:14 PM

puddin' legs 10-15-05 10:25 PM

Most folks around here ride in plain or plainish jerseys unless you're in a local club. Don't see too many pro team jersey kit riders, but the discovery jersey is the most frequent at the moment. Whatever. We're all pedalling in circles until we get there anyhow. :)

EventServices 10-15-05 10:27 PM

Aren't personal liberties a wonderful thing?

OK, some wear a plain jersey. Some wear a team kit.
I do my thing. You do yours.

See you out there.

My jersey doesn't push my pedals.

SDRider 10-15-05 10:30 PM

I don't mind really. Most of the team jerseys are actually made with better fabrics so I figure that's really what I'm paying for since they only cost about $10-15 more than a plain jersey generally. I don't own any of the really expensive jerseys like the Team Discover jerseys though. If someone gave me one though, I would wear it. I don't give half a crap what people think quite honestly.

It depends. If it's a product purchased by a lot of bald fat guys, maybe they do. Besides, if I ride slower, maybe more people will see the jersey.

i dont get it either. few years back i used to play football on the weekends with a group of buddies. we were all in our 30s to 40s and played 1 hand touch (mortgage payments, ya know). a lot of us wore jerseys and non of us cared. my son plays football with his buddies and pretty much all of them wear jerseys without being ridiculed except maybe for the choice of teams being represented.
