Actually this jersey makes a lot of sense for another reason. It is bright! It is not mentioned much, but I also wear bright colors if I can. I want to be as visible to cars as possible. I used to buy the plain jerseys. Now the brighter the better, because I really do not want to be hit by someone not paying attention.

One thing I've noticed is that if you want a very good, high-quality, technical fabric, etc., jersey that's equivalent to the pro team jerseys, only without the bold graphics and ads, it's very hard to find. It seems that unless you're getting an actual pro jersey then you're getting something of lesser quality. I'm sure for most that's fine, they're still better than a cotton t-shirt, after all.

As an example, I once ordered a plain white jersey from Voler. Same fabric description as many of their other jerseys (aries micro plus) which I've seen in a few local shops. What was it like when I finally got it? The fabric had a more open weave, i.e. lower thread count, thus cheaper. There was a pull in one of the seams, and the fabric just wasn't as soft and supple as the other jerseys they make. Another example is a Saeco Cannondale jersey. It's made with a polyester lycra material, so it's dense, stretchy, form-fitting, and it wicks away sweat very well. I've never seen anything even remotely equivalent in any of Cannondale's plain jerseys (yes I know the Saeco stuff was made by Kappa, but it still illustrates my point). In general, it just seems that it's very difficult to find the same quality of workmanship and materials in a plain jersey that you can find in a pro jersey. I'm sure someone is making them, but it's hard to tell for sure over the internet. I just know that I've never seen any in the several bike shops we have here.

I dont see what your problem is ?
Why does it upset you that people wear what they want?

SquatchCO 10-16-05 07:58 AM

I think a big part of the reason I don't wear plain jerseys is because I don't want to look like the models in the bike ads with their non-descript clothing and too-normal expressionless looks.

But also I choose jerseys for visibility, so I get bright, garish colors. It's not like Spandex looks fashionable anyways.

Edit: I also prefer the "race-fit" jerseys. I find a lot of the "normal" jerseys to be too baggy.

I have a Barry sanders college jersey i play turkey ball in every year, I am pretty sure no one ever mistakes the two of us. I don't understand "cyclist", it's if someone would ever mistake anyone of us for say Lance, Vino, Cippo, Jan, the pirate,Big Mig, basso etc, because of a shirt or a kit... If people were as hung up on having fun riding as they were with the fashion or the gear, this would be a completely different hobby all together.

I just picked this up today, on sale for $60 from $80. Comfortable, visible, cheap.-

But if I had the spare cash I would have also gotten this, with the assumption I would get run off the road a lot less if I was pimping America.-

Here's a jersey from an organized ride. These are nice, and have a great pattern. VERY popular throughout Northern California.

I like the Mexican Beer Jersey and have seen some college Jersey's that look great. Oh if I could only find a bike jersey with a Mariners Logo on it! Really, I don't care what someone wears on the road.

On a similar note, I have been hoping and praying for a San Antonio Spurs jersey for far too long. But for some reason I have a feeling basketball and biking don't mix.

I seriously doubt that Lamonta (German textiles) will benefit from me wearing my Team Lamonta jersey in the middle of Oklahoma. I paid less for it than I would have for a plain jersey, and the quality is very high, as JJakucyk eluded to. I sweat heavily as it is, even more so when I'm riding in the 100 degree Oklahoma weather in August. No, a plain T-shirt does not cut it.

And it's a sharp looking jersey, and that makes me ride faster. Everybody knows that the guys that look fly just ride harder, faster, and longer, right? ;)

How is a grey jersey visible?

JJakucyk 10-16-05 06:54 PM

It's a lot more visible than a black or blue jersey.

EventServices 10-16-05 06:59 PM

Grey works just fine . . . . for battle ships and aircraft carriers.

How is a grey jersey visible?
Because it's a bad picture.

It's more silver...ish?

That jersey is insanely comfortable. The collar fits perfectly.

There is a difference between wearing your favorite football team jersey and something that has a bunch of corporate logos on it. You wouldn't wear a jersey to play turkey ball with a big "Sears" logo across the front. Unfortunatley most European sports cover their jersey with these corporate logos. Wear what you like but I don't understand why people want to turn themselves in to billboards.

Inverted 10-16-05 09:05 PM

I don't care about professional soccer in anyway whatsoever, but I believe there is a good comparison to be made.

Not that I have the time or interest to do it myself.

smoothleg 10-16-05 09:23 PM

But, does the average joe have any idea what the professional team sponsors are actually advertising??

Those are pretty pictures, but I could never imagine wearing something like that. They kind of remind me of those 70's disco shirts.
On the other hand, I wear either a solid red or blue jersey with black shorts. Someone pointed out the other day that I looked like the new guy on Star Trek that you know is going to die.

caloso 10-16-05 11:44 PM

Feh. When I first started riding, I went out an bought a Postal jersey. Then I found out that some riders thought I looked like a ****er and some thought I looked like a poser. So I went out and bought some plain jerseys. And the more I rode the more I realized that any rider worth his salt really doesn't care what jersey you wear if you can pull the train, close up the gaps, and chase down the breaks.

So, ride your bike hard and wear what you like. Personally, now my favorite jersey supports my alma mater's cycling team:

That reminds me I have this SWEEEEET polyester Star Trek shirt I got as a halloween costume a few years ago (I went as a Treky with the broken glasses & everything). I should bust that out for a group ride sometime for a good laugh, it fits exactly like a long-sleeve jersey and even has a zipper.

pigmode 10-17-05 11:27 AM

I have one team jersey originally bought in '95. Its a Rominger era Sportful Mapei-Clas. Still has never been worn. I'll wear it if I someday acquire a NOS Colnago BiTitanio (yea, right).

Nope. Plain is fine for me too. OK - I have an old Raleigh jersey that I bought too, but I only wear it rarely.

jackb 10-17-05 11:56 AM

I not only wear plain cycling jerseys, but I wear plain everything. In general, I do not buy a piece of clothing or gear if the logo of the manufacturer is clearly visible. I've been know to sit for twenty minutes or so with an article of clothing and a stitch puller removing labels and logos of various sorts. I see know reason to advertise anything and I make no statements through the clothes I wear or the gear I use. I have nothing to say to anyone that I don't know or the public at large. When i buy a bike, the first thing I do is try to remove all removable stickers and decals. A person would be surprised how nice some things look without words and logos plastered all over them.
