Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OCP question-How many Starbucks latte's do you consume on a ride?

Every single time I ride down the coast there are always a few cyclists hanging out at the Starbucks in Carlsbad. What's the deal? These people can't be on a serious ride can they? Coffee dehydrates you right? I always find it tough to surf after drinking coffee unless I guzzle a few bottles of water before I go out. Granted, it gives you a jolt of caffeine (especially that Starbucks crap) but it can't be good for your body on a tough ride...maybe they're at the end of their ride?

So, which one of you is it?

also zero. i think Starbucks is a blight on modern society. plus, it's overpriced.

i usually have a bagel with hummus and a Coke after my Sunday morning rides. (really good bagel place at/near the ride meeting point)

I agree 100%. I haven't been in a Starbucks in at least a year. I made homemade waffles this morning and had a cup of Gevalia about 2 hours before my ride.

Yes, you did. For those outside the know, Coffee Emergency. Try the Code Brown if you're into espresso.

I like Starbucks, but at $3+ for a latte, I had to find a way to feed my addiction for cheaper in the long run.

I drink a tall black nothing in it coffee for $2 but it's not the cash that's the problem.
I hate drinking out of a paper cup.
So I take my coffee on the inside.
And then go ride. I like a good caffeine buzz. It helps my endorphin buzz.

None ... although I do see lots of club rides stop at Starbucks and the like.
BEFORE the ride ... a nice cup (or MUG) of Kona Blend, maybe with a splash of Kahlua or Bailey's sounds good to me ...
Yeeeummm.

Several local club rides meet at a local coffee shop before and, presumably, after a ride. I imagine some of the riders like lattes (probably those stinkin' liberals). I can't imagine stopping in *during* a ride, but I usually have a cup or 2 of home-brewed coffee before a morning ride.

I like the Starbucks Coffee. I buy it, have them grind it and I take care of the rest. I would not buy it if I had an alternate source of comparable coffee. I am one of those severly caffeine addicted types that can drink the 6 shot espresso right before bed and get better sleep than if I hadn't had any coffee. I like the bold coffees from Starbucks like the Kenya and Ethiopia Sidamo. Damn now I will have to go make some.

I had a Starbucks coffee in an airport about 10 years ago. It was not just overpriced. It was bad coffee. Never been back.

The Starbucks house blend could choke a goat. I'll stick with a DD ice coffee, cream and sugar please.

I never drink coffee before during or after a bike ride. Water and Gatorade are all I drink when I'm cycling. If I drank coffee before or during a ride, my stomach would be upset and I'd have to stop and run off into the woods somewhere every five miles!!

I do like Starbucks, but more as a "treat" and I occasionally have a nice bottle of wine with my dinner and enjoy beer on a nice hot summer day at a cookout etc...

The only time I used to drink Starbucks was the morning of a x-country race. Grande mocha an hour and a half before. Had to pee like a race horse but the caffine conveniently covered up any lingering injuries I didn't want to feel during the race. Plus the races only lasted a little under 20 minutes so it was all I needed.

I did it for good luck.

Now with biking, I haven't gotten into the club scene and am nowhere good enough (or confident enough) to race. But when or if I do, Starbucks will make a glorious return. You just don't mess with Lady Luck!
