Some people think that just because they drive a 3,000lbs giant, they are God.
I was riding home today after a group ride and saw something on my path. Ahead of me I see cars swerving around something. As I get a bit closer, I see a pidgeon. This pidgeon was unable to fly and it was struggling around on the floor trying to get across. I weaved into the middle of the two lands and held traffic. Stopped and put my bike down.
The motorist started blasting their horns. I was like WTF
. It's bad enough none of them would get out of their cars to do anything, they had the nerve to honk at me.
I moved the pidgeon on the grass and mounted my bike. I was going to go home and pick up some bread or something to help it while it felt better(this is only like 2 blocks from my house). I was waiting for cars to pass so I can get into the turning lane, and i looked over and I saw the pidgeon try to fly. It actually got up and flew ontop of some building. It was strange to me because it was on the road struggling hardcore.
In any case...Motorist are bunch of f heads.
Im pretty pissed that people honked at me

I have not had an experience like that but I would also be mad if I saw it. You did the right thing. I do see alot of stupid stuff but those cagers do not like each other either.

Yes, you did a good thing. Sometimes I wonder if the word humanitarian isn't totally inappropriate given what a**es so many of us are. Then, there are caring people such as yourself who redeem my faith that most are good. It's just that the a**es seem to make the loudest noise.

You did a very good thing.
Most people are too numb to feel empathy for other humans, much less their fellow creatures. I believe car culture contributes a lot to that numbness.

BTW I agree with everyone else. That's a great thing you did, and it's a real shame that people don't care enough about life to get out of their stupid cars and help.

Ignore the idiots on the road. Just the other day I was doing nothing wrong at all riding on my way back home, and some trashy boy in some broken down piece of crap car (that probably cost less than my bike) screamed 'Get off the f****ing road!' I was hugging the curb and was barely taking up any space...

Round these parts we have to stop to let duck families cross the road. I'm serious. I almost took out a mother and half dozen mallard chicks with my car when I didn't realize why the oncoming traffic had stopped...Few days later, on my bike this time, I saw another family hesitating before beginning to cross. The 'bold' chicks were edging onto the road, but momma mallard was keeping back, not trusting me. Maybe it was the same mother,thinking I wasn't to be trusted, given my near failure to stop in my car...So, I rode out well into the middle of my lane, and stopped and made sure they made it across ok.

As a hunter (years ago), I have to say it bothers me greatly when the average person has no respect for animals. A good hunter cannot stand to see an animal suffer in any way. It simply is not humane. Most on here probably don't like hunting, which is perfectly fine, but I hope at least some understand where I'm coming from.
When faced with an injured animal, the right thing to do is either nurse it back to health, or do the right thing and put it down quickly and as painless as possible. Never let an animal suffer, even if it means you need to be an extra 2 mins late for that valuable pedicure at the salon.
You did the right thing by trying to help.

Just lift up the clipless shoe and point to the cleat. . .gets the point across a lot faster than the finger. . . I've reigned in the finger after one too many guys around oakland asking me to "show me that ____ finger again"

See, if I was a hunter, I'd be hiding in the bushes w/ my rifle popping tires on idiot cagers. Then when they got out of their cars to investigate, "POP", right in the ass w/ a tranquilizing dart. Then I'd tag them and release them in the wilds of the Antartic.

Thank you, Ovoleg, for saving that pigeon. You did the good thing and set a great example--even though the jerks seemed to have taken center stage. I volunteer with a wildlife rescue group as a rescuer and emergency hotline operator. The good news is that I have found that drivers are really great, on the whole, when it comes to helping animals in distress. As much as I don't like people driving and talking on cell phones, the increase in cell phones has really increased the number of successful rescues.
The behavior of the pigeon is probably due to being lightly grazed by a car and being stunned. What you did was very important because in the state he was in he might have been hit by a car before he could take off. If they don't recover quickly like your pigeon, we keep the birds in a dark quiet room for several hours or up to a few days. Sometimes we cannot detect any injury, but they are in shock and might have bruises and sprains.
Wildlife rescue groups like mine, the Native Animal Rescue of Santa Cruz, CA, need lots of volunteers who are willing to rescue animals and/or transport them. It is very rewarding work and the people you work with are deeply passionate and compassionate about animals. Maybe this is your calling. Find out about the wildlife rescue in your area. Even if you do not volunteer, it is good to know the number to call if you find an animal in distress.

I think you did well by trying to help but I wouldn't worry too much about the pigeon's plight. You see, everything in the wild dies a violent death in one form or the other. It either dies of disease, dies from an accident, starves to death or something bigger than it eats it 
. That's just the way the maker designed things. It is always prudent to make a call of whether to put it down or rescue it when it comes to an injured wild animal. From what you said, the pigeon may be dead this morning 
but at least you have a clear concience. As for the inconsiderate cagers..... maybe they'll leave this world by one of the above mentioned methods .

I would have ridden right on by with a smile on my face. Pigeons are filthy creatures and I wouldn't hesitate to snuff one out. Flying rats is what they are. My neighbor used to shoot them with a bb gun off his property. Didn't even make a dent in the sky rat population in our neighborhood though.
You should have a) let the cars finish it off or b) put it out of it's misery with the heal of your shoe. I sure as hell wouldn't risk my life for one of those filthy creatures though.
