Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Look Ergostem

What is the point to the Ergostem? I can see how it would be handy for finding the correct stem when fitting a bike, but once you have the correct position, why spend $200 for a 400g stem? What am i missing?

Joe, you didn't miss a thing..if you didn't buy one. That is the biggest gimmick that I have ever seen. And did you notice that you have to dissamble the handle bar if you want to remove it? Won't even work as a shop "setup stem".

I vote 2 big thumbs down!!

I think it is primarily used when more than one rider will be using a bike such as some teams, or rentals, or on stationary trainers. When used as original equipment, it allows stem length experimentation without having to go through the bother of changing stems.

There's another company who makes a less expensive version, but I can't recall the name.

Its about the only way of experimenting with bar position, esp when trying out aero positions. Its more of a tool for elite riders and coaches. The lack of a front-loading bar clamp is a flaw, but when the ergo stem came out, there were no front loading stems to swap in. The tightening system is also a bit weak, but for all its faults, what else are you going to use for the job?

Look also do an ergo seatpost, with variable layback.

I would have to say about the only use I can see in it is for a stationary fitting bike for a bike shop (i.e. set a customer up on a bike and adjust everything, including the stem, to get the size?) but I doubt anyone would ride with that...
