Another OCP Question
I think my disease is progressing. Here are my symptoms…..multiple bikes, each one progressively more expensive and of higher caliber even though I’m not a racer. I love lurking at my LBS and the internet
searching for new parts that I don't need. Was it wrong to buy new Bontrager Carbon Fiber bottle cages just because they look so cool even though the ones I had were perfectly good?
My wife is starting to wonder about me. Am I afflicted with OCP or is everything normal? Are the warning signs there? Is there a cure?
I must admit I feel so much better getting this weight off my shoulders.

We are the wrong ones to ask. Most of us feel the same way. I say no problem you're perfectly normal. My wife would disagree and think we're both crazy.

Wife (aka Mrs. Reasonable): Why the heck are you buying another set of bottle cages?
Me: "think man think": Ummmm, these cages were scientifically designed to hold my water bottles better than the other ones.
Wife (now Mrs. Skeptical): You mean these are better than the black ones, the silver ones, and the blue ones that you already have? And your spending a hundred bucks for cages to hold your cheapo bottles?
Me: Doh! Did I tell you how much I love you sweetie?

You forgot a line... insert it after the line from Mrs. Skeptical.
Me: Good point, honey. I guess I'll need those new Zefal Insulated Water bottles. Better make it an even $120.

Yes, let your illness come to complete fruition. If you truly love your machines, and take exceptionally good care of them on a constant basis, then you are definitely approaching a substantial level of OCP.
Contrary to popular belief, OCP is not just about having the best equipment. You can own a an old Schwinn and still be OCP. It's how you treat your Schwinn on and off the saddle that matters. OCP is first and foremost, a serious mental condition. Buying loads of high end gear is simply a symptom, a result of your illness. Remember, there is no known cure, and no dosgae of Prozac can make the symptoms subside. It sounds like yours is progressing along nicely.
If, after every good ride, you feel the need to sit down with a Starbucks, stare and talk to your bike while wiping it down gently with a diaper, then you are already there my friend.

I guess it would be bad if your wiping down your bike after a ride and started muttering (in the voice of Gollum from Lord of the Rings) "My precious"!!

If you are getting into financial trouble and ignoring things you shouldn't, then get on a program of some sort. Otherwise, enjoy your sport. And at least spend some of that time riding one of your bikes.

I don't even own a road bike, but I'm OCP.
Why? Because I TREAT my $600 dollar hardtail mountain bike with slicks like it's the most exclusive piece of cyclery ever made.
And I ride road shoes with Shimano R540 SPD-SL pedals...
Eh?

The really worrisome thing is that there are people who would first even question the need for carbon bottle cages( we ocp's never say carbon fibre, how passe, and if we write it, it is written fibre, not fiber, but better just carbon). second worrisome thing is there are unfortunatel tech idiots out there who would even CONSIDER riding with cages made of anything other than carbon - man that is scary. jeez just thing of the major grams they are adding- can't they feel it going up the hills? Plus my bike gets hives if it touches anything aluminum or (OMIGOSH) steel? eeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus, after your ride, don't forget to clean your tires with a wet washrag. That way, as you are drying the tires with another rag, you can perform a safety check of the tires themselves.

Sounds like you have two different camps here. One who is only worried about weight and another that likes the look of their ride. The Cragar S/S wheels on my GTO doesn't make it any faster but they sure do look cool!
No one in this thread has said that they don't ride their bikes but they do enjoy the sport and are having fun fixing up their rides....just like the old days with my Goat...
