Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Meat. Must get meat....I did it today! 3,500 miles. And the meat?

28-mile ride today put me over the top. I've now hit my final goal of the 2005 season--3,500 miles!

And like last year when on November 10th I set my THEN personal best of 3,200 and took a picture, this year I can show the same thanks to the yellow pages. Just as I was going to try to snap something of myself, a guy walked down the driveway delivering the yellow pages. I asked him to snap a pictures of me, explaining the milestone. He understood. He's a rider too! So here it is....

3,500 miles...and most were wonderful.

The meat part of this day?
Well, you see I eat turkey sandwiches for lunch most days of the week, avoiding the higher fat, higher salt lunchmeats. I've done this for a couple of years now as a way to prevent bouts of gout that I am prone to. But I love my lunchmeat, even though I had to give it up. Today, Mrs. Hip had gone to the store last night and brought home some mortadella in anticipation of my setting the personal best today.

MMMmmmm, meat good!

Not at all.
There is one void left for now it seems.
Why it looms I know not...just that is looms and calls in cycling circles.

I've never done a century.

Bah! I planned on 3000 this year, but I just topped 1800 on this last ride. I feel like a bum!

Between the immigration stuff, U2 tour, wedding expenses, moving, etc, I slacked off bad on my riding. Next year will be a different story though!

Congrats Hip.

Inspirational.

I'm curious though, did the orthopedist say anything about how long that hip would last? Do those things wear out?

I really enjoy your contributions to the forum.

Why yes they DO wear out, just like any mechanical part.
Average use...20 solid years perhaps.
My kind of use...who knows, but it will be less than that.

When it starts to go and bother me again, there is a surgery that is less evasive and takes less time to rehab from because the titanium rod into the leg bone is there for life. All they do is pop out the sleeve that the ceramic ball joint sits in in your pelvis and replace it with a new one. Not supposed to be as bad as what I originally went through five years ago this month. I suppose I've got another five years or so to go yet.

I knew this going in...and never had this done so that I could simply rid myself of the daily pain. Nope, I wanted that PLUS being able to become athletic, in shape and competitive again. I have gotten that and will continue to go for it!

Thank you.
I was just thinking about that this morning as I sip my Cafe Vienna. It's been a great season for me.

No doubt!!! Then again, you probably need prior approval...how about, "Honey, there's this SEVEN that I have my heart set on. How about if I make it to 4,000 miles in '06?"

Way to go Hip. I'm a few hundred miles behind you but I think I'll have a few extra weeks to catch up.

Cheers.

Sounds like a BioMet hip joint. My cousin does replacements in Columbus, and she was trained in Chicago by some guy named Finn (he designs joints) to do revisions, which I believe is what you're speaking of.

BTW, Congrats on 3.5K!!

Congrats on the 3.5K Hip! That's just terrific.

If you don't mind my asking, what caused the need for the replacement? Was it an accident or something degenerative?

The reason I ask is that I have 2 close friends that for different reasons are going to have replacements but are putting it off as long as they can.
