Do I need jogging in my training?
Hello guys,
Do I need to jog some duration to add on to my training days? Is it necessary for cycling?

It's not necessary for cycling, but it is good for overall general health. Being on the bike doesn't put any stress on your bones and jogging will help build stronger bones.

Hi Roger,
I cycle as cross training for running and find that they complement one another. Now, all I need to do is learn how to swim. :-)

I recently started running to supplement my training. Then I quickly found out that the muscles in my quads were developed from cycling entirely and running ended up messing up my knee. I should have eased into it. Just because I have the aerobic capacity to run x miles and y time doesn't mean my body can do it. I just went to PT today. I'm supposed to work on flexibility in my quads, stretching 3-4 times a dayd for 30 seconds each leg. I was given permission to be able to ride the bike though!!!

Cycling puts minimal stress on the bones, which is one of the advantages, but not in the extreme. A certain amount of stress on bones strengthens them. Running or weight lifting is good additional training, although more as a complement than a supplement.

Plus, running burns way more calories if you are pressed for time and need to work off a little holiday weight. And if you're not a racer it's an important part of overall fitness. Really what good is it if you can ride a 100 miles but can't run one.

yes, add jogging. It'll burn fat way faster than cyclying and will make you faster on your bike overall.

I like running in the cooler months to mix things up. 3-4 miles every once in a while is nice. Also, as suggested above, it's great for when you don't have the time for a real ride.
