building at 16, OCP????
 

ok, im 16, would you call me alittle OCP if i was building a colnago c40? ive been riding for 4 years and had a good starter bike.trek 1000. then made my way up to a cdale r800(show us ur cannondale thread), now i wanna race, and wanna upgrade my bike. I got the frame for christmas, but am paying for all the parts and accesories. Would you concider me OCP?

Nope. Don't ever sell the bike. I still ride the one I built up when I was 17. Best money ever spent on a 'thing'.

Heck I built my first racing bike when I was 15. Mind you, that's what everyone did in those days. Custom built frame from 531db, custom built wheels with Dura Ace hubs, DA derraliers and 600ex cranks. Mind you Dura Ace was cheaper in those days.

It's fun anyway. You can make your own decisions about what you like and what fits and for better or worse you less likely to think of your bike as an easily disposable commodity.

You want to upgrade your R800? Why not? Just look at what you need, and what performs best for racing specific activities, if that is what you want. Don't waste money on bling if you want to race. Spend it on parts that will perform, more so than simply look good.
For example, Ritchey WCS bar/stem components are great and cost effective. Light, yet very stiff for racing. Buying a set of fancy carbon bars is really not necessary, unless you need a certain level of vibration dampening for extremely long races (like 100mi races, etc).
Nothing wrong with upgrades that are made to help you win a race.

sorry if i wasnt clear, i wanna upgrade my bike, im keeping the r800 and building the colnago C40. Im thinking about bring my cdale down to bonita springs, FL so i can ride in group rides and races, hopefully.

You dont want to race on a really nice bike unless you have alot of experience. Nothing about your current setup is holding you back from winning. I would just get a decent frame thats not too expensive and throw some very good components on it.

Especially if you plan on racing crits, where the potential for mishap and damage is much higher than longer tours.

If you plan on racing the C40, that's your decision. I personally am not sure if I would, unless I had lots of extra money, or sponsorship that could replace my bike if something should happen.

Good luck with that, I'm 15 and in the prcoess of looking for a frame to build up with chorus hopefully record. Edz made a good suggestion, buy a decent frame and get great parts. Someone told me that if you buy good parts, they should last you through 2-3 frames.

It's nice to see other teens getting high-end bikes.

What, is there something wrong with teens getting bikes that tour riders are hard pressed to use to their full potential? :rolleyes:
I'm sorry, I don't qualify for OCP at all----almost all Al. and I actually ride my bike.

I love that 16 yr olds are riding high end bikes. Being a new member with only 16 posts do you know what this OCP stuff is about?

Ride what you like.

However, they've given you some good advice regarding a race bike; good components on a decent frame that won't kill you if you have to replace it after a crash or two. Go check out some races and see what everybody's riding.

I think you don't qualify for ocp yet. But I can tell you another ocp subsidiary that would welcome you. :D

JOCP isn't all about the bike or the money, contrary to popular opinions. (I can't vouch for ocp on this) I'm the chairman and I ride an entry level Felt F90. But having a something nice certainly doesn't hurt. ;)

Here in NY, its 17 for a license. In a year. Plus, I will ride it alot and hopefully race. So I think its a good investment. PLus im puting centaur on it and paying for everything. I dont have a job(I cant with all the sports i play, plus my parents tell me you have your whole life to work) so i opt for extra chores around the house, saving my money very diligently. It will be a while when im finished with the bike, but i would have worked to put it together and am not milking my parents for all there money. Plus, I do plan on rides above 50, 100 miles ect......Like i said b4, i dont think its ocp bc its gonna be put to good use, not just for the sake of having a colnago..........

And 55, by you sayin that its great for teens riding high end bikes, is it sarcastic?

No sarcasm intended - sorry it came off that way. Many of us "older" guys that have nice bikes do so at the expense of having less in other areas of our lives. For me it's my car. I personally choose to drive my serviceable 16 year old car with 160K miles so I can put more resources into my bikes.

At the same time, stating that you don't think it will be OCP because it's gonna be put to good use assumes that people who consider themselves OCP don't ride or put their nice bikes to good use - which is completely wrong. We may not race but we ride the hell out of our bikes.

And remember, OCP is a state of mind. An attitude that says: "screw you, I don't care that you think I'm not 'deserving' of my nice bike because I don't use it the way YOU think I should. I'm going to do what I want."

your post gives me a new persepective on the term OCP. That is pretty much my state of mind. And also nomatter what ne1 commented, i was still gonna build it.HEHE.I do have a better understanding of OCP, or in my case, JOCP. And, sorry, I dont plan to give up my car when i get it,(i no i no)but i will have the cheapest car to put all my money in my real mode of transportation-my bike-colnago wit centaur that is. HEHE

I think it's great that you are riding and want a nicer bike for racing. As long as it doesn't put you into serious financial hardship and if you intend to ride it regularly, go for it.

A side note:

Your signature confuses me. Unless you intended to change the verse from spoke (or spaked in Olde English) to spanked. Just curious.

I always wondered how everyone here could afford all these bikes.
