Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The perfect storm, er, stem

I hate my CF stem. I'm looking for the perfect stem, 120mm, 7degree rise, 31.8 clamp...any ideas?

Ritchey Pro. Cheap, fairly light, 4-bolt clamp works well and has a little more surface area than the WCS version. Comes in 84º (1º off your 7 degree rise) and comes in 31.8. I actually have that exact stem sitting in room right now in a 110mm.

Ritchey WCS. Straight forward and very light Al stem. Only 6 degrees rise though. The 110mm stem is advertised at 110 grams. I just got a brand new 120mm on eBay yesterday for $32.

What kind of carbon stem do you have? Why do you hate it? Want to sell it to me?

I was looking for a good stem recently, and this was my choice. They are VERY nice.

Thomson X2..

https://www.glorycycles.com/thelx2rost.html

Not quite as light (~140g) as WCS, but unbelievably durable.

I've used Giant, Easton, Ritchey and Thomson and the Thomson is the most resilient of the bunch. Strong design, Holds it finish and corrison resistant.

Docray, I'm using a FSA 115 140mm (31.8) 6 degree rise and love it. Super stiff.

I have the orig. one that came w/ the bike that I've swapped off brand new, never ridden - 120mm 6 degree - which you can have for a song if you're interested. Let me know...

This is the best deal in town for a name brand stem:
https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/144...S-140-Stem.htm

This one has a very high bling factor and mysteriously looks like the bontrager carbon:

I dunno about that. There's good and bad out there. Easton's stems, for instance, are less desirable because they have a goofy clamp design that minimizes material where you need it most. This allows the bars to flex a bit more during sprints and out of the saddle efforts.

Ora =heavy, flexy.
Thomson X2-bought one-really stupid design where the bar needs to fit perfectly or you can't tighten properly.

I bought the FSA. thx.

WCS or Syntace F99 for low weight. The F99's have all just been recalled, though...

Bothof those are very flexy - not for sprinters.

How about the Deda Newton stem? Lightweight, stiff, alloy of some sort, "Tour Proven".

I had a wcs on my bike and it was flexly. my buddy that weighs 140 has the same stem and it's fine for him. I found a steel stem that's rock solid. its an ird that is on sale...https://store.interlocracing.com/cr1thst.html. the thing is, it is not an open face design and its for a 26.0 bar. the best thing from my point of view is that it has a ti finish so it matches my ti seatpost! what more could I ask for...solid steel performance and ti finish!

I vote for ITM Millenium... the bar/stem combo has been rock solid on my bike for the past season. lightweight and very solid

oh wait, did you want a 31.8 clamp? Mine is a 26.0... but pretty sure ITM makes a millenium in 31.8 too

hey fogrider -- any idea how much that weighs? I have an older bike that takes a 1" stem. Looking to replace with a slightly shorter stem.

Deda Einstein - 120mm weighs approximately 112 grams, it's got beautiful machining, and a carbon face plate to boot with 4 Ti bolts. Stiff as hell, and only 8 degree rise (if I'm not mistaken). I've got one on my Trek Madone, wrapped around FSA K-Force carbon bars. It's lighter than most carbon stems out there. Check out wisecyclebuys.com
