Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am going to purchase a road bike for the first time and I am looking for some feedback. I am 5'10" and weigh 195. I have tested a 2006 Trek 2100 56 and was quite impressed. Does anyone here have any suggestions, comments, critiques, etc. before I make this purchase? I have done a few searches and seen plenty of comments on the bike and it seems good, but I do not know anything about road bikes. Have had Trek Mountain bike for years with no problems at all. Thanks in advance!

Bikes: '03 Marin Mill Valley, '02 Eddy Merckx Corsa 0.1, '12 Giant Defy Advance, '20 Giant Revolt 1, '20 Giant Defy Advanced Pro 1, some random 6KU fixie

The main comment you will get is to test ride everything in your price range and really that is a good one. I am also 5'10" and a bit heavier and I just got an 06 Specialized Roubaix Comp for less than $2k out the door. Not sure what the 2100 runs but I bet it is getting close to $2k if not more...you may want to look at the lower end (not that they are low end) full CF bikes as well as they are in your price range.

Nothing against a Trek...they make good bikes.

You might see if they've got an '05 2100. The end-of-year sale price should be about the same or a bit less than the '06, but the '05 component specs are a bit better. (By the way, the Trek website lists the '05 with a 105 rear derailleur, but mine came with Ultegra and other folks have said the same thing--it's worth checking on the specific bike.)

if you're looking for straight performance and value, a trek is the right place to look. for that matter, any of the big makers will fill your bill. shop around for the sales and get the best deal you can. you should ride a few bikes to see if you like the fit, handling and ride of one over the other.

Bikes: 2006 Trek 2100D - 2005 Giant NRS - 2004.5 Giant Suede

I just purchased a 2006 Trek 2100D. The price of the '06 will be about the same as a '05 on a year end close out if not cheaper as Trek reduced the price of the '06 by reducing some of the specs of the bike (don't worry it is not that much different). You will probably look to get the '06 for around 1300 and an '05 for that price as well. If you can get the '05 for that price do so as the '05 has better parts. Although, the '06 is really a nice bike for the price.
