Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dr. Dan Plummer was struck and killed by a falling tree while riding in Los Altos Hills on New Year's day. Dan is a member of Bay area cyling team Team Spine.

The team is planning a memorial ride within the next couple of weeks. If you knew Dan please contact me for more information.

Sad news. I hope it is some comfort to his family and friends that he was doing something he loved.

I didn't know Dan, but saw him probably a few minutes before he died. I posted another thread about that in the racing subforum at https://www.bikeforums.net/33-road-bike-racing/163631-dan-plummer-team-spine.html Very sad.

Do you have any information about the other person who was riding with him (PM if you don't want to discuss it on here).

this is tragic - we ride this route all the time.

Our prayers go out to his family.

There's a small article in the Mercury News.

That's scary. Los Altos Hills is where I ride when the weather is bad. I was driving home that day from a Solvang research trip with my wife, in some pretty horrible weather. I mentioned while driving in the bad weather how dangerous the eucalyptus trees were during storms. Little did I know that someone had been hit by one.

While driving to work this morning, I passed two separate road crews cleaning two separate LARGE fallen eucalyptus trees from the roadway, and both were laying across one of my favorite local loops.

I hate eucalyptus trees - they are dangerous on many levels.

This is horrible! He was a hell of a guy. He'll be missed.

DJP was my "cycling mentor", or whatever. I was wondering why I hadn't heard back from him.

I just don't know what to say.

The rider with Dan was fellow Spine teammate Eric Saltzman, who was uninjured. Dan was 2005 (Elite-tandem) District Time Trial Champion.

The Team Spine website has the memorial ride information:
