Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike #7 finished - Specialized Allez Pro - w/pictures

Bike number 7, an '03 model year Specialized Allez Pro, is finished and in the barn. It was completed after dark so I only rode it around the neighborhood for a few minutes to get a taste of how it fits and rides, and for what you can tell in a few minutes - I like it!

I posted some details and a picture when I got the frame, so today I'm posting the finished product. The compact geometry is new for me as is owning a mainstream brand name. Something else I did new for me this time around was to set the Ritchey Pro Stem in it's aggressive position, so no one needs to say "flip it". I did leave a couple of spacers above the stem in case I decide I need the bars higher than the current 30 mm after I get it out for a longer ride. One way or the other, they will go away from their current position.

The bike as shown, with the relatively heavy Korso wheelset, weighs 17.37 lbs. Not bad at all, and if I decide to put my Spinergy Xaero's on the Allez Pro it will come in at about 16.8.

Frame: NOS '03 Specialized Allez Pro
Fork: Specialized C4 full carbon fork
Headset: Integrated Aheadset as supplied with frame'
Group: Full Dura Ace 9 speed using DA7800 rear dérailleur and DA7800 brakes.
Stem: Ritchey WCS OS
Handlebars: Ritchey WCS
Seatpost: Thomson Elite 330mm
Saddle: Fizik Arione
Pedals: Forte Pro Mg Ti Road Pedals
Bottle Cage: Forte Carbon
Wheelset: SuperGo Korsos

So what do you all think of lucky number seven?

Thanks for the heads up on the signature. I'll take care of that right away. As to the Fizik Arione saddle, nothing was stock. I bought the frame off ebay and the rest from ebay and elsewhere. Not sure what Specialized supplies, most likely one of their branded saddles.

Was that a NOS Allez Pro that had been sitting complete in a box since 2003, or did you buy it as a frameset? Excellent looking bike, the frame reminds me a lot of my 2005 E5 Allez Elite. I'm also curous about the fork rake. I think it's the photo angle but it looks like 38mm?

It didn't come in the original Specialized box, but it was a complete frameset including the Specialized C4 fork and integrated headset. I got it from an employee of a bike shop in Washington state, who likely got a deal from his employer and who then sold it on ebay. I'll have to check out the geometry for the frame, but I don't think the fork is 38mm.

Small world, I got my Specialized there back in July...

It's a great shop, if you're ever in the area it's a must-visit. When I was there last month they had a S-Works Roubaix with FSA K-Force crankset hanging above the service area cash register.

Bike looks great - I love the color of the frame and the accents. The Korso's look nice with the frame and I like the trim job you did on the decals.

Ok, what we need is a great shot of all the bikes in one perfectly posed photo. With you in the middle of course. Make sure not to put one any closer to the front than another - good luck - you're gonna need a real wide angle lens.

Thanks Rad. Although the only red on the bike is the Columbus logo on the chainstay and Specialized S on the fork, the red in the sidewall on the tires along with the red on the Korso rims all seem to work well together. As to the picture, why would you want to ruin a nice group bike picture with me in the middle? It's bad enough I have to shave my ugly face every morning!

I like the TST best of the lot. I'd bet you do too. Another good one, though. I wonder what #8 will be? Any hints? Are going to give us the lowdown on the Korso's?

The TST is a great frame and I really enjoy riding the bike, but the others all have their own appeal too. [I noticed that the thumbnail for the TST was actually the Ellsworth, I've fixed it and it's now the TST.] I won't be able to really ride the Allez Pro until this coming weekend, after which I'll report on both the bike and the Korso wheelset. And as to number 8, even though I'm not married and have no one to answer to regarding this kind of thing, I don't I could sell myself on an eighth bike without rotating one of the others out of the stable, but only time will tell.

A little OT, but what does NOS mean? I've been seeing that tossed around here, and other forums.
